<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I am not going to share to much politics on my column as I do not want to offend people. However I do want to stress that each and everyone does need to go out and vote! We are in a time when it is very important that the peoples thoughts and views have got to be heard and the way we do that is by voting! I will say I was a Bernie Sanders supporter, I would still vote for him today. I don't say that to make people mad, I say that because people that were going to vote for him are now saying that they are not voting or that they are going to write him in on the ballot. My suggestion is to vote for one of the candidates as each vote counts and by voting for someone that is not on the ballot any longer you are in danger of wasting your vote. Each and every vote really do count so please think about this! Also we do live in America, our country was built on having a voice to speak out, freedom of choice and the ability to have our own opinions. Please respect those that do not vote or see things from your point of view. We live in a good country, lets work on making it even better!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Good morning everyone! I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! I know we had a lot of traffic up here enjoying the last weekend before schools starts. Now its really beginning to feel like fall being folks are back in school and there are less vacationers here. I hope everyone had a great summer and are now ready to get back to school! Please remember to slow down out there in the morning, lots of people are rushing to get to work but we need to be safe around the kids!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I haven’t talked about Cable Natural History Museum in a while. I have to say I don’t get up there to the museum as much as I would like to, but I do like the articles that Emily Stone writes for the Sawyer County Record. This last one about Pitcher plants was very interesting. If you have not had the privilege of seeing an actual pitcher plant you should really go visit a bog. I have the privilege of going out on the bog and I have to say pitcher plants are one of my favorites! If you would like more information on the museum go to www.cablemuseum.org.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Hello friends! Hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather. It has been alittle wet again lately. I thing the only one that appreciates all this water is the fish, ducks and geese! It seems like its either feast or famine when it comes to the weather. Is everyone out working in their yards? Putting the gardens to rest?? I bought some squash the other day....need to buy some more. <span style="font-family: Calibri;">It was a pleasure to see my foster parents up from Minneapolis. Karen and Leif Nestingen met me in Spooner and we ate at Nicks. I have to say our waitress was awesome! She came out apologized that my dad's chicken sandwich was taking longer to cook. She was very nice about everything. Even asked me how my head was feeling when she found out I had a headache! Have to say I am glad for small town places like Nick's that have good food and nice people! Keep up the great work!</span></div>

<b>This morning I start the day by grieving for one of my dear friends, a rat terrier named Dutchess Anne. She was a great dog, loved to cuddle in blankets and run at full speed around the yard.</b><br />
<b>Last night we believe our dog Dutchess and Chloe were poisoned around 730 or so. They were in the yard, Chloe was tied up. I personally saw a car driving slow, stop at the end if my driveway. I went out to see what was going on and they left and went down the road a ways and stopped again. Not sure why. I have talked to the Wahburn County (Sooner, WI) and Barron County (Cumberland) Sheriffs department also the vet. We have heard rumors that other dogs have had similar incidences happen. We have heard if food being thrown to the dogs which then get suck and die.</b><br />
<b>I hope nobody else goes through this. Dutchess passed away from a slow horrible death and Chloe made it through but is weak but determined to make it. After talking to the vet it seems to me that they probably had ingested a rat poison that's on the market that is a neurotoxin called brometheden? I'm sure that's spelled wrong, sorry been a ling night. </b><br />
<b>My concern is to let people know so that they don't have to go through this horror. If you see or hear anything, please call the Sheriffs department. At this time they have no leads as I didn't get the plate number or make and model of the car.</b></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Times New Roman,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21.3px;"><strong>Good morning. As I traveled into Hayward this morning it was sort of sunny at my place and then it was sprinkling heavy in Hayward! Guess I just can't get away from it! LOL It makes me a little sad to see all the trees looking so naked! Its great that all the pine, evergreens don't lose their color. I look forward to moving into the coming season, its a time to regroup, look back and be grateful, look forward and be hopeful. As most of the earth takes a rest and renews itself I would like to think the same thing should apply to us humans as well. How about making some small goals, read an extra book this winter, learn to knit. Maybe do some much needed cleaning and purging...this could be belongings but it may apply to yourself as well. Set some goals for the coming year. Personally I will be looking for the next step in my college career for 2016. I want to knit more and SPIN MY OWN YARN! I want to travel to Canada! I want to spend an entire weekend on Madeleine Island! I want to bead more items and hopefully sell some of the items that I have made. I want to learn to fish, got to get the gear and I want to target practice- need a gun! So sit down and take a couple minutes to write some ideas down, then go forth and have fun with it!</strong></span></span></span></div>

<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">I could hear my roasted root vegetables sizzling in the oven when I saw their car pull into my driveway. Eric and Nanette stepped out, carrying a big basket of food. A whole watermelon, can of spaghetti sauce, two fresh tomatoes-these were things they didn't want to leave in their cabin for the winter or haul home to Madison.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">One of the items in their basket was a little weirder, though. On a walk through the woods, they'd found a small, dirty white globe on the ground. Figuring it was fungal; they brought it to me for identification, and so we could exclaim over it together. I like this kind of hostess gift at least as much as wine!</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">I'd never seen something quite like this before, and I certainly wasn't ready for the texture when I picked it up. First of all, it was heavy. This was no puffball. The thin outside coating was cool and dry, but a squishy consistency beneath that hinted at something a little more moist. It reminded me of a water balloon filled with pudding. The bottom was slightly flattened, with a limp little stem-like appendage.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">We enjoyed our dinner with the mystery as our centerpiece, but I didn't get around to slicing it open until the next day at work. A quick photo/question to my favorite mushroom expert produced a reliable identification: common stinkhorn.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">Stinkhorns are either amazing or disgusting, depending on your perspective. They begin their reproductive life as an "egg," just like the one Eric and Nanette found. A universal veil on the outside protects the developing fruiting body. Slicing through the egg, I found the compact features of a mushroom just waiting to expand.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">The thin, white, elastic "eggshell" covered a layer of tan-colored jelly. The gleba, as this second layer is known, contains both the spores and the offensive smell that earns stinkhorns their name. Inside the jelly is a C-shaped, dark-brown mass that will become the mushroom cap, and then the pure white, firm-but-hollow stalk in the center. In some countries, the gleba is removed, and the inner mass of the egg is sliced and eaten. (I think my garden-fresh green beans probably tasted better at dinner.)</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">Bursting forth from the egg, stinkhorns mature extremely rapidly. Their growth rate has been measured at ten to fifteen centimeters per hour, and an individual may take anywhere only an hour or two to "hatch." One mathematical model even predicts that the common stinkhorn can exert enough force to emerge through asphalt. By those calculations, three mushrooms emerging together could lift almost 900 pounds.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"><br style="line-height: 22.72px;" />Once grown, a common stinkhorn bears a dark cap at the top of a white stalk. The cap is covered with the slime at first, but as that wears off, a morel-like texture and yellowish color emerge. Stinkhorns can be quite phallic, and the scientific name "<em style="line-height: 22.72px;">Phallus impudicus</em>" means shameless or immodest. In the Victorian era, embarrassed citizens (including Charles Darwin's granddaughter) would collect and destroy stinkhorns each morning so as to protect the purity of any nearby maids.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">Even more offensive than the shape of a stinkhorn is its smell. Once mature, the gelatinous gleba on the outside of the cap produces a strong odor of carrion that can be smelled from a fair distance away. This attracts flies, beetles, and other insects. In Austria, blow-flies even feed on the slime. When the insects fly off, spore-filled goop sticks to their legs and they become agents of mushroom dispersal. While disgusting, this is a more advanced method of spore dispersal than waiting for a gentle breeze.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;"> </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 22.72px;">
<span style="line-height: 22.72px;">Around the world, stinkhorns come in an amazing variety of shapes and colors. From red stars to hot pink whiffle balls, and white bridal veils, they erupt from their eggs in fountains of color and stench. As saprophytic mushrooms that decompose wood, stinkhorns are an important as well as interesting part of the forest...but perhaps, not an important part of dinner.</span></div>

I know it isn't even really that cold out there, mid 50's to low 60's is not cold in the big picture. But man it feels very cold when you first go out your door and the cold air hits you in your face! Wow! I will try and stay positive.... it is refreshing, exhilarating! But I am just going to say it I LOVE fall...but dread winter. So I will enjoy and cherish the leaves that have turned.I will talk to the birds that continue to fly over the house on there way to destination unknown. I was happy to have some cranes come and visit with me in my pasture this year. Sure hope they come back as they are awesome!</span></span></span></div>

Lots of us rediscovered our inner voice and found that our stories did still flow out of us if we took the time to stop moving long enough to actually listen and write them down. It was great to meet Ryan Winn who is a Professor at the College of Menominee Nation. Some of you might know him from helping write plays about and with various Indian Nations. Some might know him for his writings in the Tribal College Journal. A HUGE thank you goes out to the Oneida Nation Arts Program that helped make this possible. <h3 style="text-align: left;">
At times reading a religious book can be hard. You feel that you don't quite hit the mark. Or you think that you are so far away from where you should be that you will never make it to the first base of life! Sometimes what we need is a book that is just written so we can read, understand and apply it to our lives.</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<b>Reading this book has really brought a lot of questions to mind. I think its good to get out of our comfort zone and really look at ourselves, our religion, what God wants us to be. It is good to questioned what we are suppose to be doing and how we are suppose to do that. </b></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b><b>I found this book to be "real". Something that I wanted to read and work on. Not someone telling me this is how it needs or has to be done. I like that there are questions as it makes me think. Makes me wonder if there might be others ways of living my life, gives me a different perspective.</b></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<b>I would recommend checking out this book. See what it has to offer you. See how things can change in your life.</b></h3>

<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">"Did you see that giant chicken!?" exclaimed my co-worker Jayme as she stepped out of her Jeep in my driveway. My puzzled look must have answered her question. "There's a huge chicken of the woods right next to your driveway! It's bright orange. I can't believe you missed it!"</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">Jayme's excitement was warranted. Chicken of the woods (a.k.a sulphur shelf) are choice edible mushrooms, and she is an enthusiastic mychophagist (mushroom-eater) and wild forager. A little embarrassed that I had missed such a neat find, I joined her and Steve, her partner, on a quick hike back up our long gravel drive. "I won't tell you where it is," she teased, "let's see if you can find it yourself."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">

<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">Once I was looking, it wasn't hard, but I did discover why I hadn't seen it before. Tucked away up a steep bank, several yards back in a balsam thicket, the cluster glowed orange on the cut stump of a fallen tree. We grabbed baby birch stems and kicked our toes into the dirt, clambering up the near-vertical road cut.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">It was impressive. Nearly two feet across, with layer upon layer of rippling brackets giving it a ruffled appearance, the yellow edges and undersides contrasting with rich, orange caps - this mushroom was beautiful. It is also unmistakable. David Arora, author of "Mushrooms Demystified", includes chicken of the woods in his "foolproof four." Upon closer inspection, we found that the cluster was fresh, clean, and flexible. Just ripe for eating.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">We reached into the mass, and gently tugged free a few of the most fresh and tender looking caps. The flesh was cool and moist to the touch, with a texture like fine velvet. Part of this consistency comes from it being a polypore. Unlike stereotypical mushrooms with the umbrella-like cap and radiating gills, polypore mushrooms are composed of many small, vertical tubes. Reproductive spores are produced on the sides of the tubes, and use gravity to disperse out of the bottom opening. From there, the spores use wind and animals to disperse them into a new home, eventually growing more mushrooms.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">The pore structure also contributes to the succulent, stringy texture of the caps, which reminds some people of chicken meat. Soon we had tugged free enough caps to share with everyone for dinner.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">Cooking mushrooms is extremely important for both safety and nutrition. Heat can denature toxins, kill nematodes, and break down tough cell walls to give our bodies access to nutrients. After wiping off a few specks of "trail spice," we added the orange caps to a warm skillet in a pool of melted butter and garlic. With a lid to help keep in the juices, the "chickens" were soon sizzling merrily.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">The first bite was the best: chewy but tender, with a light lemony undertone and a touch of the savory umami flavor, too. Though we wanted to keep eating, each of us tasted only a couple of small pieces. Chicken of the woods causes mild stomach upset in some, and allergic reactions in a very few. With any wild mushroom, it is best to try only a little at first, to gauge how your body will react.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">After a comfortable night, I headed back to the stump to collect more. The wood still looked solid, so I suspect that this fungus will be back again next year. Chicken of the woods is a parasite (it kills trees) and saprobe (it decomposes dead trees), most commonly on oaks. After years of decay, it renders the wood - especially the heartwood - into a friable mess of brown cubes. Until then, it may fruit in the same place year after year.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">And until then, I will continue making it part of my dinner. As I pulled off more chunks for my skillet, I noticed slugs and flies dotting the yellow undersides of the brackets. In just a few days, its brittle flesh would be riddled with insects, slug trails, and beetle holes. The fungus will die back. The decomposer will decompose.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22.7199993133545px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 22.7199993133545px;">The tree feeds the fungus. The fungus feeds the animals. Eventually the soil will feed a tree. And somewhere in that cycle, is me.</span></div>

With no moon, they glittered brilliantly in the inky black sky. I paused from unloading the car, and gazed heavenward with him. Breathtaking. I love living in the middle of nowhere. But after I closed the car door, and even the dome light went dark, a sound penetrated our consciousness, too.</span></div>

<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">Hoo. Hoo. Hoo. Hoo. The repeated note sounded kind of like a back-up beep, or the car's warning ding that I left my lights on or the keys in the ignition. But all was dark, the keys were in my hand, and no engine noise accompanied the mystery. Suddenly my synapses zapped, the sound registered, and my eyes lit up in the darkness. "It's a saw-whet owl!" I grinned, excited at the prospect of a new avian neighbor.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">The last time I heard the incessant (and somewhat annoying) call of a saw-whet owl, I was in the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern California. From there to Wisconsin seems like quite a stretch, but saw-whets breed in mature forests with an open understory from southern Canada to the northern and western United States.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">While their habitat preferences are pretty well understood, the movements of saw-whets are not. Granted, it's hard to track small things that are well-camouflaged and only fly at night. We do know that they can cross the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. One saw-whet owl even landed on a fishing boat 70 miles from shore in the Atlantic Ocean! Concentrated banding/recapture efforts have started to fill in the blanks.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">One study in southern Indiana found that saw-whet owls tend to move into a territory when prey numbers are high, and move somewhere else when prey numbers are low. Deer mice are their preferred prey, along with other small critters. The study also noted that during a year when the owl numbers were below average, it had also been the worst year for acorns in recent history.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">This is just one more example of how mast trees send ripples far out in the ecosystem. Mast trees </span><span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">save up their energy for three to five years before synchronously producing thousands of seeds (acorns in this case) all at once. </span><span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">Since mouse populations are known to fluctuate with acorn abundance, it follows that during a non-mast year, the mouse population would be low, and the owls would migrate somewhere else.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">It also makes sense that the mast of acorns we experienced last fall may have increased the local mouse population and attracted this cute little hooter to my backyard. (Remember our discussion of how passenger pigeons might once have eaten all the mast, leaving no acorns for the mice, and no mice for the deer ticks? And how acorn caps made the ski trails rough this winter?)</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">A banding study from Maryland found that saw-whets increase and decrease on a two year cycle, with an irruption (a migration in response to irregular changes in food supplies) every four years. Based on that data, 2015 should be an irruption year for saw-whets! In theory, it's a simple equation: more acorns = more mice = more owls. In nature, I know that nothing is quite that free of complications.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">No matter why he's here, I'm excited that the smallest owl in eastern North America is beeping in my woods. Without feathers, the saw-whet owl is the same size as a robin (another sign of spring that's singing in my woods). With feathers, he is an adorable, top-heavy oval of brown-and-white-streaked fluff with expressive yellow eyes. If he's lucky, a female will arrive soon; responding with her own series of whistles. To seal the deal, he must fly in circles, and then present her with a gift of food - the limp body a mouse.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">If they decide to breed here, the saw-whet couple will likely place their nest in an old woodpecker hole, excavated by the pileated woodpeckers or northern flickers that also frequent my woods. She won't do any interior decorating, but just starts her family on whatever debris is at the bottom of the cavity. If the mice are plentiful, she may lay up to eight eggs.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 21.2999992370605px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
<span style="line-height: 21.2999992370605px;">Perhaps it's a little early to throw a baby shower for my new visitor, but I'm thrilled at this addition to the neighborhood, and wish him a well-fed and productive spring.</span></div>

<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
This is an invitation to attend a Seed Starting and Seed Saving workshop at the Spooner Ag Research Station on Tuesday March 31 from 6-8:30 pm</div>
<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
The discussion will focus on a review of general botany (flower parts), pollinations/cross pollination, seed saving (including proper sanitation and seed borne diseases) and seed starting techniques.</div>
<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
MGV Russ Parker will be leading the discussion and promises to enlighten us with lots of thought provoking ideas and practical concepts.</div>
<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
This session will include a short presentation and lots of hands-on activities and demonstrations! Everyone will be asked to help/assist in seed planting of our tomatoes for the North Country Master Gardener Plant Sale. Everyone will also have an opportunity to take home supplies and seeds to start their own seeds.</div>
<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
If people want to bring seeds to exchange you are encouraged to do that as well.</div>
<div class="ecxMsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 20.8266677856445px; margin-bottom: 1.35em;">
This will be a great hands-on learning session and I encourage you all to attend!!</div>

I have had quite the adventure with my heath lately. I do want to say a thank you to Mitch and David for the great care that they gave me in the ambulance on the way to Duluth. Thanks also to all the doctors and nurses that took care of me and ran ever kind of test imaginable on me. Thank you to Dr. Andrei in Hayward that removed my gall bladder and has put me on the road to feeling better. I have one more surgery this week and that will be the end of all this being lazy! I am the worse patient let me tell you! A Huge thank you goes out to the Barber/Johnson family for taking care of me, rides, taking care of the animals and well putting up with me being surly.</span></span></b></div>

March maple madness, amazing migrations, and the genius of germination-the
March Hungry Turtle Weekend program is Anticipating Spring, Friday and
Saturday, March 13 & 14 at the Amery Food Hub. The ground may still be
thawing, but it's not too early to plant a seed (indoors) or consider the
remarkable journeys that our avian neighbors make as they travel back north
each spring. And it's prime time for tapping maple trees for sap to boil
down into maple syrup, a true northern delicacy.
Friday evening features a book signing with Paula Westmoreland, author of
This Perennial Land: Third Crops, Blue Earth, and the Road to a Restorative
Agriculture. That takes place in the Hungry Turtle Gallery in the
splendidly renovated Fay Building on Keller Avenue, "the main drag," in
Amery. Local musician Amy Johnson will perform after Paula's signing.
Farm Table restaurant, also located in the hub building, is open for dinner
that night, and from 10:00 am to 8:30 pm on Saturday. Farm Table serves
fresh, distinctive dishes prepared primarily with ingredients sourced from
small local farms (including those that are part of the Hungry Turtle
Farmers Co-op, the third partner in the Amery Food Hub).
Saturday's schedule is packed with events to get you excited about spring:
Cris Cantin kicks it off with a seed starting demonstration at 9:00 am.
Cris will cover all you need to know to get your garden off to a running
start when the real warm weather rolls around. Then at 10:30 am local
teachers, biologists and bird enthusiasts Matt Berg and Brian Collins will
share their fascination with Wisconsin's feathered population.
The afternoon is all about maple-inspired cuisine, with plenty of
opportunities to taste, and to learn about maple syrup's versatility in the
kitchen. Teresa Marrone, author of Modern Maple, leads off the afternoon
session. She'll cover the basics of tapping your own trees for sap, and
talk about her culinary journey to liberate the syrup bottle from the
breakfast table. Teresa will demonstrate a couple of novel uses of maple
syrup in the kitchen, and there will be other maple-y treats to sample, as
well.
The afternoon finale showcases culinary drama as Farm Table chefs and
talented amateurs show off their skills with maple cookery. Attendees will
have the chance to taste all the dishes prepared.
The morning session is free, and extremely family-friendly. The afternoon
of cooking demos and samplings is $15 (kids 12 & under free).
