Spooner Advocate - Springbrook Column, July 3, 2014

Good day friends-The sun is out and there is a breeze. This is good being we are suppose to heat up and well I am not looking forward to that! The weather sure has been up and down so I am hoping everyone has survived the storms without getting to many trees down! The winds sure have been crazy! Hope the gardens are growing good.

Mikhaila's graduation party went well. We had it over in Minnesota so that the family would not have to come all the way over here. We both enjoyed visiting with our guests and just visiting! Mikhaila loved all the cards and gifts she has been receiving! Thank you all for taking the time to some to the party, visiting, or sending a card! We appreciate it!

So here is a question for all of you... who reads the Farmer's Almanac? Which one do you read? I usually go with the 

Old Farmer's Almanac from Robert B. Thomas, started in 1792. It seems like alot of people read and prefer this one. Any input on this? Why do people like this one better? Is it more accurate? I recently purchased the Harris Farmer's Almanac first published in 1692. I got it for the articles in it, also they did not have  the Old Farmer's Almanac. In the Harris almanac they had a great story about a dog that had been adopted from an animal rescue (he was recycled by getting a  new family) and then he has learned to pick up bottles and plastic to be recycled. It was a great story which always touches my heart as most of our animals are ones that have come to live with us after having other owners. Thank you for the call from the folks in Earl that may have seen our cat! I will be coming through there to see if I can find her. Cats are so elusive, they do not feel the need to check in and they have their own agenda!  If anyone could catch her that would be wonderful! LOL Any info, please give us a ring.

Can you believe it is July!!!! Where has the time gone?? If you are born this month I hope you enjoy having a birthday that is warm, sunny and where there are alot of flowers and plants growing! The rains have helped green things up that is for sure! Have a wonderful birthday and I hope it is happy and that you do something fun! My niece Felicia has a birthday this month, my friend Hailey Olson has a birthday as well- I hope each of you young ladies has a beautiful day!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column for June 26, 2014

Good day friends-Went to the Sawyer County Dairy Breakfast this weekend. It was as good as always! Took Mikhaila with me and met our friends Karen and her daughter Austin, and Mikhaila's boyfriend Kaelan up there. Mikhaila has recruited her friends into the whole go to ever dairy breakfast that you can get too idea. Mikhaila really loves the dairy breakfasts that the communities put on and it has become our thing to do together. A big thank you to all the volunteers that put alot of work into making sure that the day goes off without any problems. Thanks also to all the sponsors and people who donated to make these events happen. Thanks to all the dairy folk out there and that includes sheep and goats! We appreciate all your yummy goodies! Happy dairy month! 

Does anyone else just feel like they are swimming in a circle? I feel like I have so much that I want to get done, so much that needs to be done. But I sure feel like I don't get anything done!Or at least I do not see as big of a result as I would hope to see. I think the weather has had a huge part in that with all the rain and cloudy days. Just seems like the summer goes whipping by and here I am with a whole list that seems to grow instead of get smaller!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- June 12, 2014

Good day friends- Did anyone go to the Spooner Garden Club plant sale this last Saturday? I have to say it was a wet morning, but the folks out there were soooo cheerful, even though I know they were cold and wet! Mikhaila saw the ad for the sale and said we had to stop by to see what they had! I am glad she saw the ad as I thought it was last weekend! I think I have a gardener in the house and she may not be completely aware that she has been bitten by the plant bug! So we did get some awesome plants, I got some Dahlias! I am so excited! I am going to get them started in the house and then go from there. I need to do some research on them again. I got bit by the Dahlia bug a couple years back at the MN State Fair, well also out at the Arboretum.  I really would like to row a bunch of varieties and see what ones do best here. Does anyone out there have any advice for me? Suggestions? Mikhaila got some Irises! Had to laugh as she said they were going to be her project this year! If anyone knows me I am an Iris fan, my dad always like tulips- not me I like Irises! It was great to meet these folks from the Spooner Garden Club- Mikhaila was able to tell them thank you in person for the Scholarship that she received from them! We would also like to send a big thank you to the Spooner/ Trego Lions Club for the other scholarship that Mikhaila has received! Both of these are organizations that we support. Thank you to all the members out there! 

 

I will be holding a plant swap at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College Farm,  on June 14, 2014 from 10:00-1:00pm. If you have plants that you do not need please bring them, you can swap for another plant or just drop them off for others to take, if you have seeds as well that you would like to share please bring them. If any one has black plastic pots, flat trays or anything else that they are not going to use please bring them with, they will be cleaned up and reused next planting season! If nothing else come and chat with us gardeners. The Farm is located at 13457W Frommel Road. If you need directions give me a call.

Spooner Advocate Column- Springbrook Column- June 5, 2014

Good afternoon friends- Well yes I am in the state for a change! Now it is time to get our gardens in and get all the plants out of my house! I look like I live in a green house! It has been alot of fun though starting all the plants this year for the community gardens. Are there others out there that are working on your gardens? I am sure that most of you have them in already, or nearly done. I have a long way to go before mine is done.

 

Does anyone out there have extra plants that they don't need? We are still going to be doing a plant swap so put some plants aside and come visit with me! My friend Cris Cantin`is having her plant giveaway THIS Saturday June 7th from 10:00am until to 1:00 pm at the little park in Prairie Farm, there will be signs up in case you are not familiar with the area. I am proud of all the young adults at Spooner High School you have all done a fabulous job at school and I know you have a bright future ahead of you!  Hats off to the class of 2014!! I would also like to congratulate the Hayward class of 2014! I hope each of you are blessed with a fantastic future. Go and enjoy your summer graduates!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- April 24,2014

Good afternoon friends- Sorry there wasn't a column last week. I was out of town for a conference and the internet was down the entire time I was down there in Green Bay! Everyone was really unhappy! We really do not recognize how connected we are to the computer and our phones or anything electronic until it is not working!

I hope everyone had a  wonderful Easter. I thought the weather was just lovely! Mikhaila cooked the whole dinner- I was so proud of her! She did a fabulous ham with the the glaze and the cloves, sweet potatoes, bean casserole, peanut butter pie and deviled eggs. All from scratch! I hope whatever you did that you had a wonderful day! I wish my Great Aunt Claudia would have made it to her birthday- she would have been 90 years old yesterday! I know she is in a better place, but it sure is hard on those of us that are left here. Happy Birthday Auntie!

I heard the frogs..... FINALLY! That means that Spring is here! The birds have come back to the farm- I am so happy when I hear them singing and see them bouncing around out there. It sure was a long winter friends and I am so happy that it has finally come to a close.

I hope that people are getting ready with their plants out there. Gardening season is right around the corner! I hope that there are some people out there planting some extra plants for the Spring plant swap! I haven"t set the date in stone yet but I would like for it to be somewhere around the 2 week of June. If you need to drop off plant or seedlings please let me know and I can pick them up.

He walks amid the mist coming in off the lake.
It has cooled now the sun has gone to bed.
I know it is him,
even though I can not see  his face,
can't make out what he is wearing.
I can tell it is him as I know the strength of his arms,
the width of his chest.
I recognize his walk.
How he proudly carries himself.
He is beautiful to watch in motion.
This strong, deeply complex man has me mesmerized.
