There are a couple new businesses in the area worth mentioning. Wembendangig (Those who are hopeful) Community Sewing Center has opened! Mary is stocking her shop with fabric, beads, jingles, bells, quilts, handmade items. If you would like to take a quilting class or need help making something Mary is the person to talk too! The shop is located at 14362W County Road K, the shop number is 715-699-1379 and the email wembendangig@yahoo.com If you bring in a pow wow button you can get 10% off your purchase, also tax free with a Tribal ID. Right down the street from this awesome shop is Cloud 9 Coffeehouse- 14392 W County Road K. I have to say I have really enjoyed the panini's that Sandy and Eva have created over there. Its a great place to have an iced coffee, a frappe or one of there other wonderful drinks. Sandy's menu changes as they are always trying something new, right now its BLT panini. Anyone out there have some fishing gear that they no longer use? One of my goals is to get a license and get out there and fish! It doesn't need to be pretty, just so it works.

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook/Trego Column, March 26, 2015

Good morning! Hope this finds everyone out there doing great. It sure is bright and beautiful out there! I am loving this weather I hope you are as well. 

Sorry the column has been a little sporadic lately. I have had quite the adventure with my heath lately. I do want to say a thank you to Mitch and David for the great care that they gave me in the ambulance on the way to Duluth. Thanks also to all the doctors and nurses that took care of me and ran ever kind of test imaginable on me. Thank you to Dr. Andrei in Hayward that removed my gall bladder and has put me on the road to feeling better. I have one more surgery this week and that will be the end of all this being lazy! I am the worse patient let me tell you! A Huge thank you goes out to the Barber/Johnson family for taking care of me, rides, taking care of the animals and well putting up with me being surly.

Thank you to all the people that worked on putting the New Ventures Gardening Seminar on this last weekend. You all did a wonderful job again! All the presenters were great. I have to say I really loved Pat Thomas talk on pollinators as well as our own local Mike Heim who showed great pictures of his wonderful plants! I learned alot and am pumped to get going on the garden. Thanks to the Spooner Garden Club for all the great desserts and helping out at the seminar-the garden cub meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm. Questions 715-645-2346. If you missed this great event and want to go next year put it on your calendar- its held every year on the third Saturday in March.

A BIG happy birthday goes out to John Hendricks of Trego! This is a belated Happy Birthday as his birthday is March 23rd! Arlene Hendricks- Hencz and her sisters send you their love and wish you a fantastic Birthday!

Spooner Advocate Column- July 25,2013

Hello there friend-Were you able to get out and enjoy the cooler weather? I was really happy when the cooler weather rolled in as we were at the LCO Pow-wow all weekend. I have to say it was quite a turnout and everyone had a great time! The Aztec dancers were very cool too see all dressed up and well... what a dance! So much energy! I would never make it through just one of their dances!

The Spooner Memorial Library has their Summer Reading Program up- sounds like they are off to a really good start with all the folks that they have signed up! They offer an Adult reading program, a Teen-Ager as well as a preschool-12 year old reading program. Mikhaila and I participated in the one last year and it was just a great reason to read a book.... like I need a reason! LOL Anyway the ladies at the library need you to sign-up you and your kids, there are great prizes to win as well! The Sherman & Ruth Weiss Community Library have started their summer reading program. You can sign your Pre-K-4th graders up at the library. Its a great way to get kids to spend time reading! Reading can take you on an adventure as a cowboy, or be the first woman to fly a plane- it all can happen while reading a book! Spooner Advocate Column- June 20, 2013

Hello there neighbor- I hope all the dads out there had a wonderful day yesterday! We had nice weather so maybe some people were out fishing or working in the garden. Speaking of fishing, anybody out there have some extra fishing poles sitting around? I would really like to teach my daughter how to fish and actually learn again myself.... I haven't fished since my grandmother and I dug a can full of worms and had cane poles! Years have gone by, but I have some fond memories of that time. I thank you in advance for any fishing tips- I am feeling pretty clueless.....but I did get the book from the DNR so I will start reading that. Can't believe that it is almost the end of June! Where has the summer gone? I sure hope everyone is having fun while they are in our great state of WI. We welcome all of you out of towners back to the cabins. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! Happy Birthday to all those of you that have June birthdays. I hope you enjoy the sun and all the beautiful flowers, the flowering trees. Have a beautiful day and we love you! I have had some interest from people wanting some perennials. I know most plants like to be split in the fall but maybe there are some extras out there from spring splitting. Spooner Advocate Column- February 21, 2013

Wow did we all have fun over this last weekend? I hear the snowmobilers are out in full force, I am glad we have the snow for them. Sounds like all the businesses have been busy with having the outdoor enthusists as well as all the folks up for the Birkie! Welcome to NW Wisconsin folks we are glad to have you enjoying our little area of NW Wisconsin.

 

Town of Springbrook will hold it's meetings and elections at the VFW meeting room in  Springbrook until further notice.  There are only two elections this year, Feb. 19th and April 2nd.  The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m..  Questions please call Kathy Helm 766-2155.

 

Happy Birthday to all those February birthdays out there! I am partial to February as I am a February birthday myself- the date is the 20th, due to public demand! =) We are hardy people to be born in such a cold month. =) Hope you have a beautiful birthday. You are special and we love you!

 

Namekagon Congregational Church had a wonderful turn out for their event this last weekend. The soup was great, lots to bid on in the silent auction and we got one of the last two pies. Yes the pie is almost gone! Sherrine introduced me to some wonderful people, I was humbled by how many of them read my column. The miniatures that Nel Lee creates are absolutely wonderful! What a God given talent she has to make wonderful works of art out of everyday items! I feel in love with her Asian themed buildings, the koi fish were so pretty and the greenhouse was spectacular and made me want to start planting!  Mikhaila and I were so glad we were able to make it to this fun event and meet a bunch of new friends. Sherrine would also like to let people know that the church is also accepting 3 inch by 3 inch knitted or crocheted squares. These will be made into finger puppets and sent to our military people. If you have seen Sherrine’s finger puppets than you know what a big smile they bring. The squares can be dropped off at the church or at Northwind Books and Fiber.

Red Cedar, the annual journal of arts and literature at UW- Barron County is looking for submissions from creative writers, visual artists and photographers for publication in the 2013 edition. The deadline for the contributions is Monday, February 25. Submissions for creative writing may include up to five poems or up to three stories or creative nonfiction pieces of fewer than 1,500 words each. Good morning neighbors! How is everyone doing out there? 

 

All I can say this morning is burr. I am really getting soft in my old age I tell ya! I suppose I should not complain as it is winter and we have been fairly spoiled this year.

 

Congrats to the Spooner Rails for winning against Ladysmith last Friday. Sounds like it was a good basketball game! I also heard that the teens really had fun at the dance afterwards. Sounds like there was alot of movin' and groovin'. Thanks to all the teachers/volunteers that chaperoned the dance.

Hayward Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild held their meeting today and all I can say is these women can quilt! We had a great demo by Jean, showing us some heart patterns and JoAnn, showing us how to applique. I am leaving with some great patterns and inspiration. Hayward Piecemakers Quilting Guild- Nov, 2012

I joined the Hayward Piecemakers Quilting Guild awhile back and when we had our last meeting- November 12th I finally was able to wear my name tag! Yes, that's right I FINALLY got it quilted! Are you proud of me or what!!! LOL I have to say I was pretty happy as I had been trying to get it done and with being in school and all the other obstacles in life I have not been able to sew the name tag OR make it to a meeting. It was great being able to see all the lovely ladies, see what beautiful projects that they have been working on. Of course that day I did not have my camera, so no pictures of the wonderful projects. However I will walk you through the making of the name tag.


The pieces were cut into squares already, so I just made sure they were squared up. Then cut diagonal.




Did the same with the other colors. I had to make sure to keep the colors in their own piles as each color is a different size.




Now some would use the paper pattern and just sew the fabric to it and then later take the paper off. Not me as I have not done that before. I was on a time limit and I did not want to mess up. So I just pieced it like I have learned to do. So the white will be the center with the dark blue pinned in position for sewing.




Bad picture, my camera is going. I need to get a new one quickly! But here you see the red id sewn on two sides, then pressed out. Now the other two pieces are pinned and once sewn you will then press out.





As you see here each color has been sewn, then pressed out. The little triangles you see are trimmed off before you pin the next color in place.




I like to pin the next color on first and then what I do is trim it to make sure that it is straight and the little triangles are off.





Press them out. I am a presser. I like to know what it looks like and if it is straight. Whatever you are comfortable doing.




This one was pinned and then sewn. I did this as some people will sew and then trim. Some people pin and then trim.

Then you get to put the strips on that go around the name and the square.




Half done, now do the other two sides.




So this is what the badge is going to look like. I will write my name on the white piece. But before doing that I have to bind it.





Here I am folding the edge over and pinning it. Then I will start sewing.




Here is the back, you can see I like little stitches. This is my first attempt at doing a binding. I was amazed at how long it took me to do just this little bit! My friend Anita can bind! She is super fast. Maybe some year I will be half as good!





Done sewing! The edges are straighter than they look! LOL




Complete for the meeting. Have my name on there and the Guild pin. At some point I may use some floss and stitch my name. For now it is just fine.

I was pretty happy that I got it done AND I won the drawing for wearing my name tag! I never win anything! I was super excited!
