Spooner Advocate Column- June 20, 2013

Hello there neighbor- I hope all the dads out there had a wonderful day yesterday! We had nice weather so maybe some people were out fishing or working in the garden. Speaking of fishing, anybody out there have some extra fishing poles sitting around? I would really like to teach my daughter how to fish and actually learn again myself.... I haven't fished since my grandmother and I dug a can full of worms and had cane poles! Years have gone by, but I have some fond memories of that time. I thank you in advance for any fishing tips- I am feeling pretty clueless.....but I did get the book from the DNR so I will start reading that. Can't believe that it is almost the end of June! Where has the summer gone? I sure hope everyone is having fun while they are in our great state of WI. We welcome all of you out of towners back to the cabins. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! Happy Birthday to all those of you that have June birthdays. I hope you enjoy the sun and all the beautiful flowers, the flowering trees. Have a beautiful day and we love you! I have had some interest from people wanting some perennials. I know most plants like to be split in the fall but maybe there are some extras out there from spring splitting. If anyone has some to share please let me know so I can hook you up with those looking for plants. Thank you! The Spooner Memorial Library has their Summer Reading Program up- sounds like they are off to a really good start with all the folks that they have signed up! They offer an Adult reading program, a Teen-Ager as well as a preschool-12 year old reading program. Mikhaila and I participated in the one last year and it was just a great reason to read a book.... like I need a reason! LOL Anyway the ladies at the library need you to sign-up you and your kids, there are great prizes to win as well! You can sign your Pre-K-4th graders up at the library. Its a great way to get kids to spend time reading! Reading can take you on an adventure as a cowboy, or be the first woman to fly a plane- it all can happen while reading a book! Hello there neighbor- What great weather we had on Saturday! It was really a nice trip up to Ashland as Mikhaila had to take her ACT test at Northland College. It was fun just to go up and see the lovely town of Ashland. I got a bunch of homework done at the library while she was taking her test. Afterwards we walked around the Northland College Campus and just relaxed as it has been a very busy couple of weeks. I would like to congratulate all the Seniors that are now done with high school and moving on to college, or careers. Whatever you have planned for your future I wish the very best for you! All the other young people that are out of school please have a safe and fun summer. Enjoy spending time with family and friends. We all know summer goes by really fast, so enjoy! Spooner Advocate Column- May 16, 2013

Hello there neighbor- I know there are people out there that must have some activities going on at their church. There must be some youth out there with things going on as I am sure people are starting to get projects done and started for the fair. Please let me know as this is your column folks. I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day! Mikhaila gave me a nice card, a plant and a movie. It was nice to have the weekend off and I was able to go out and meet up with some friends and eat some awesome food! It was a great weekend. Hello there neighbor- Are we all happy to see that the warmer weather has melted most of the snow that was dumped on us last Thursday? Wow is all that I can say! The poor Robins were not happy at all- seemed like they gave me dirty looks when I saw them. I suppose its hard to find worms when 14 or more inches of snowed are dumped on the ground. Everyone seems to be singing a happier toon now that the sun is out and most of the snow is gone. A big Happy Mother's Day to all of you out there. I hear it should be a good weekend as far as weather so safe travels to all. Remember to thank all your Aunts and other female family members as I am sure somewhere along the way they have "mothered" you in some way. Remember it takes a village to raise a child! The Shephard's Harvest is happening this weekend! May 11-12, 2013 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo, MN. They are open Sat 9-5 pm and Sun 10-4 pm, admission is FREE! Leave the museum at 10 am, bring water and snacks and be prepared to walk 5 miles on uneven, uphill terrain. Birding in the National Forest, Thursday May 16th. Hike trails and visit sited within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in search of birds. You will be hiking through a northern hardwood forest, and skirt the edge of a bog and wetland. Meet at the museum at 6:30 am and return by 10:30 am. Space is limited so please call and register by May 15th. Cost is $8/member and $13/non-member. No charge if you are a registered Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival participant. Spooner Advocate Column- April 25, 2013

Happy Earth Day! I know it has really been all over the map as far as weather but I hope you can get out for a walk today and enjoy the sun. Better get out there so that you can enjoy the sun and the warmer weather before the snow starts flying again tonight! Are we ever really going to have a spring? It really has been a strange Spring, I sure hope it does not go right into hot weather. How are the plants going out there? Have you got little seedlings growing in the house or maybe your greenhouse? I have some starting at the house, mostly heirloom tomatoes. I have also been eating tomatoes off the plant I brought in last year. Nothing like a red tomato off the vine when it is snowing. My pepper and tomato plant have all kinds of flowers and fruit starting so there will be a good batch of yummies to eat again soon. Remember you can bring plants in the fall and see what you can get to munch on over the winter. In other parts of the USA and other places tomatoes are considered a perennial! Happy birthday to all those April birthdays out there! Hope you have a beautiful birthday. You are special, and we love you! I sure hope you are coming to the Lac Courte Oreilles Sustainable Living Fair on Thursday APRIL 25th, 2013 from 10 am- 3pm. You have to come to the fair and enjoy all the fun things we have set-up for the community! We will have speakers addressing the mining issues, teaching about keeping backyard chickens. Make a rain barrel, starting seeds, build a rocket stove. Bring your unwanted electronics in to recycle for free(no big tv, or console tv). There really is too much to list here so all I can say is please show up on April 25th ready to meet some great people and to have a lot of fun! LOL Wait a couple hours and I am sure the weather will change. Talk about a rollercoaster ride huh? I came home the other day with baby goats and heard baby geese, here the mom and dad had the 5 new hatchlings out in the snow! So far we have hatched out 7 baby geese, I am hoping more are on the way. Happy birthday to all those April birthdays out there! Hope you have a beautiful birthday. You are special, and we love you! Lac Courte Oreilles Sustainable Living Fair is APRIL 25th, 2013 from 10 am- 3pm. You have to come to the fair and enjoy all the fun things we have set-up for the community!
