Good morning! I sure hope that everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! Seems like there were a lot of people around the area. Have to say I had a quiet weekend at home, although there sure were alot of fireworks  going off in the neighborhood! 

 

July 17-19, 2015- 35th Annual Conference and Campout. Where? Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa! If you have not attended this you are missing out!!! Hope to see some of you there!

If you have ever been to the Potter's Shed in Shell Lake you know how fun it can be!  They are a cafe/ coffee shop. Its a great place to take the kids where you can paint in the Creative Area. Have you heard about Hoofbeat Ridge Ranch in Springbrook? They are open 7 days a week for trail rides. Spooner Advocate- Springbrook/Trego Column- August 7, 2014

Good day friends- Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.I have to say I was really lazy all weekend long and did not get too much done around here! Oh well! Dishes and laundry will never be completely done! LOL I am hoping we get some rain today. There was a light sprinkle yesterday, I really thought we were going to get nailed as fast as it came up! The chickens are getting bigger, soon some will lay eggs.... I am eggcited!

The Sawyer County Fair is right around the corner, August 14-17th!!  We always go and have a wonderful time!They need some volunteers to make the  fair go along a little more smoothly. If you can help volunteer please call Kelly Froemel at 715-699-6015. Mikhaila  and I have had fun volunteering at the fair in the past, matter of fact I better get on the phone and call Kelly! I can't believe it has been 18 years that I have had the privilege to be your mother!  I am so proud of the wonderful young lady you have become. Happy Birthday to the President of the United States! Spooner Advocate Column- April 18, 2013

Good morning- Hope this finds all of you out there enjoying nature- I guess you could be shoveling, snowmobiling, fishing or just trying to stay warm! LOL Wait a couple hours and I am sure the weather will change. Talk about a rollercoaster ride huh? I came home the other day with baby goats and heard baby geese, here the mom and dad had the 5 new hatchlings out in the snow! So far we have hatched out 7 baby geese, I am hoping more are on the way. Happy birthday to all those April birthdays out there! Hope you have a beautiful birthday. You are special, and we love you! Lac Courte Oreilles Sustainable Living Fair is APRIL 25th, 2013 from 10 am- 3pm. You have to come to the fair and enjoy all the fun things we have set-up for the community! We will have speakers addressing the mining issues, teaching about keeping backyard chickens. Make a rain barrel, starting seeds, build a rocket stove. Bring your unwanted electronics in to recycle for free(no big tv, or console tv). There really is too much to list here so all I can say is please show up on April 25th ready to meet some great people and to have a lot of fun! Any questions shpould be directed to the museum at 715-798-3890. Wildflower Hike to Morgan Falls and St. Peter's Dome, Saturday May 11th. Sounds like the museum's naturalist Emily Stone will be taking you on a hike to check out the spring plants. Leave the museum at 10 am, bring water and snacks and be prepared to walk 5 miles on uneven, uphill terrain. Birding in the National Forest, Thursday May 16th. Hike trails and visit sited within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in search of birds. You will be hiking through a northern hardwood forest, and skirt the edge of a bog and wetland. Meet at the museum at 6:30 am and return by 10:30 am. Space is limited so please call and register by May 15th. Cost is $8/member and $13/non-member. No charge if you are a registered Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival participant. Things to put on your calendar ... Shephard's Harvest, May 11-12, 2013 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo, MN. They are open Sat 9-5 pm and Sun 10-4 pm, admission is FREE! Good luck to all those quilters who put their beautiful creations in quilt shows, I hope you win some ribbons! I know I am always inspired by each creation that I see when I go to the shows. We really have some talented people out there. Wisconsin Farm Tech Days July 9-11, 2013. Held at Breezy Hill Dairy, 147 16th Street, Dallas, WI. They will be open 9-5 pm daily, further information www.barronfarmtech.com . The 2013 Hayward Quilt Show is July 26-27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Flat Creek Inn in Hayward. There must be something going on at the churches, quilting groups, 4-H or something. I appreciate all of you reading the column weekly. How is that Spring list coming along? Have you started any plants? How about surprising someone with a Random Act of Kindness- Send a card to someone with a packet of your favorite seeds, drop off a jar of home-made jelly to someone who is home bound. There are so many options and you don't have to tell the person who you are. Just think how great you will feel after putting a smile on someone's face. Until next week.... think Spring!

Spooner Advocate Column- October 11, 2012

Good morning folks. As the weather has been getting colder I thought we could talk about some things to do to get ready for colder weather, this is just easy things to do to get started, especially since we have flakes forcasted for this week again. Get a bucket by the door that has sand in it, you can use it on the slippery steps, it is also animal friendly. Or you can always use a sand mixture with the snow melt pellets mixed in - just remember those pellets are hard on animals feet, maybe plants around the steps. Put a shovel in the inside of your house or at least on the porch- we forgot this last year and well... it was alot of fun walking through snow to the barn to get one! Have you cut back the plants that should be cut back in the fall? Did you leave some of the plants, grasses, bushes that have gone to seed or that are overgrown for the birds to eat and take shelter in when it is really cold? Please think of the animals that might come through your yard this fall or winter, try to make it as animal friendly as you can. If the cold weather coming early means a cold winter for the humans just think what it means for the animals that live out ther all the time. Do you have a tip or a recipe to share? I would love to hear it.

The Springbrook VFW Post 10568 will be having Les Millard over at the VFW Canteen hosting Karaoke from 5:30-9 pm on October 13.This is a change in the date so please note that so you go on the right date. The Canteen will also be hosting a meat raffle on October 13th  from 3-5:30. If you have any questions feel free to give them a call at 715-766-2128, they open at 3pm on the weekdays and noon on weekends. As always everyone is invited to come to the community potluck every Wednesday 5-6 pm, please bring a dish to share.The Springbrook VFW Post 10568 is having a Gun raffle. Raffle tickets are $1 donation it 6 for $5. There are 5 top prizes, 3 of which are guns, the fourth and fifth prize are $100 cash. The Gun raffle prizes will be awarded November 21,2012 so you still have time to get your raffle tickets. You may buy tickets for the raffle while you are up at the Canteen listening to Les! They are also collected unopened, new toys for the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program.

Sherrine called to let me know that the  Namekogan Congregational  Harvest dinner is Tuesday October 9th from 5-7, the column had already gone to press last week.  I am hoping that the meal is a success, I will try to get over there to eat some great food.

Please remember that the deadline for information making it into the column is Sunday night or early (by 9am) Monday morning. The sooner you tell me the longer I can put it in the paper. So if there are events that you know of that are planned already please let me know, that way we can get them out there to the public.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time at Stone Lake Cranberry Festival. I am sure that it was alot of fun, I heard some positive feedback so people must have had a good time.I know that I would have liked to go but I worked all weekend. I still need to get over there and buy some cranberries from someone! I would love too freeze a bunch and be able to dry some as well.

 Mark your calendar- the 1st annual Octoberfest is coming to Shell Lake October 13- 5pm- 11 pm. Sounds like they are going to have brat sliders, sauerkraut, pretzels. All you can eat Bavarian Waffles. Live polka band with dancing, of course beer and other refreshments. Thimbles Quilt shop in Trego will be starting their demos again now that it is fall. Every Saturday they will demo something new to make, they usually have  treats and a how- to sheet that you can take home so that when you get around to making the project you can remember how.
