Classes at the Hayward Merchantile Company

So last week, on Valentine's Day Mikhaila and I took a cooking class at LCO Community College. Chef Al came from Hayward Merchantile and taught us some tricks to using balsamic vinegar, gave us some new recipes to try out. It was the best time I have had cooking in along time! Mikhaila really got into it and was just so excited to help out, learn some new recipes as well as EAT the product! LOL So here is the info on what classes they are offering at Hayward Merchantile.  I would highly suggest going to them if you live in the area! We arelucky to have Chef Al back again this week.... on my birthday! How lucky am I two great meals within a week of each other!

Classes at the Hayward Mercantile Company

The following is a partial of classes for 2013. Many will be added during the year.

Saturday, March 2 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. p.m. Pasta

Chef Max Hintler will prepare pasta with a unique approach. Entrees will include Sweet Potato Ravioli with prosciutto, diced onions and maple balsamic vinegar. Then add Frutti Di Mare (pasta with seafood) and Chocolate Pasta dessert to complete the class.

Saturday, March 9 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Unique Ways to Cook Wisconsin Game Fish Chef Max Hinlter

Opening day of fishing season isn’t that far off. Max will show you how to prepare innovative and inexpensive dishes from Wisconsin game fish and seafood available at your local grocery store.

Mexican Fish Sandwich Max has put a new spin on what many folks call a fish taco. Tilapia is sautéed in olive oil with avocado, mango and red onion. Red cabbage and a splash of Cranberry Pear Balsamic Vinegar top it off. All of this inside a soft taco shell.

Cajun Catfish is an old term. Again Max does it different with Chef Jeff’s Cajun Seasoning in a super hot skillet.

Wild Rice Salad is made with a good grade of wild rice, sautéed mushrooms and walnuts.

Smoked Salmon Salad is a unique combination of greens, blue cheese and a combination of 18 Year-Old Balsamic Vinegar and Blood Orange Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

You will also receive printed information on how to fillet a northern pike without the bones and a list of common Wisconsin game fish.

Register no later than Tuesday, February 26 at 10:0 a.m.

Namekagon Congregational Church had a wonderful turn out for their event this last weekend. The soup was great, lots to bid on in the silent auction and we got one of the last two pies. Yes the pie is almost gone! Sherrine introduced me to some wonderful people, I was humbled by how many of them read my column. The miniatures that Nel Lee creates are absolutely wonderful! What a God given talent she has to make wonderful works of art out of everyday items! I feel in love with her Asian themed buildings, the koi fish were so pretty and the greenhouse was spectacular and made me want to start planting!  Mikhaila and I were so glad we were able to make it to this fun event and meet a bunch of new friends. Sherrine would also like to let people know that the church is also accepting 3 inch by 3 inch knitted or crocheted squares. These will be made into finger puppets and sent to our military people. If you have seen Sherrine’s finger puppets than you know what a big smile they bring. The squares can be dropped off at the church or at Northwind Books and Fiber.

Wow did we all have fun over this last weekend? We did get snow, just not what they predicting that we would get. After working 48 hours over the weekend I was glad we did not get as much as they said we were going to get. It sure did look pretty on all the pine trees!

I am going to ask a question here that has come up more than once lately. Why is there such a difference in how the snow is removed around the area? I am not picking on anyone, just wondering if one county has a bigger budget, more equipment? I appreciate all the hard work that folks due to make driving safe for all of us.

Goodbye to Yesterday by Wanda Brunstetter

Goodbye to Yesterday (Discovery Series #1)

Hey all you Wanda Brunstetter lovers... here is another great book from our favorite writer.
Luke and Meredith Stoltzfus are a young married couple that are going through some of the same struggles that we are all facing or have faced. Luke loses his job at the furniture store even though he is a talented woodworker, this starts a frustration inside of him as he is not able to provide for his family.
As he is struggling with his being laid off, not meeting bills, and all the extra stress that comes with problems. The one peron he pushes away and hides his feelings from is his wife. Will this hurt their relationship, will they become close again? Meredith is going through her own stress with having no money coming in, Luke does not want her to get a job and should she tell him her big secret?
As a new job becomes available can Luke rise to the occasion and learn the trade? Can Meredith keep her secret? Will this new job be a blessing or will it just bring more trying times for this young couple?
This was a great book. I love that Ms. Brunstetter went with a little bit of a different type of book- its thin, tall and part 1 of a 6 set series.
I received this book free of charge from Handlebar Publishing. In return for the book all that they asked me to do was share my honest review of the book with others. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did.

The 4th annual Seed Swap - Jan.19, 2013 Prairie Farm, WI

Hello there friend.... I am so far behind on sharing some of the things that have been going on around here! I do apologize for not staying in touch as much as I should. I do want to talk to all of you- it is just really busy in my life! LOL

So last month my daughter and I went to the 4th Annual Seed Swap in Prairie Farm. Wow there were alot of seeds! I was impressed with all the little seed packets that were on the different tables.

How it was set-up was bring some to share, or swap, or just come and get some seeds to plant. Cris also was putting together seed orders that she would send in as one order and everyone would save money that way! Great idea huh?

People came and dropped off seeds, some were store bought- others were from seeds that they had saved from their gardens.

All I can say is that it was great to get some new seeds.... ones like calypso beans which were on my list to buy this year. I also scored sunflowers, new pink and purple radishes and tons of other things! I am very excited that so many people came and shared so many different things! You guys are awesome!

I would also like to say it was awesome to see all my friends down in that area. Cris you did a great job getting it all together. I really liked your fish soup as well as the bean one! Treats and coffee were also great!

I would throw the challenge out there to any community- host a seed swap! Share the one thing that ties us all together, that nourishes us.... food. It is not hard, it can start small..... food is the greatest gift you can give someone besides friendship. This way you can make new friends and get some new things to try.

Here is Mikhaila working on some homework. The bag next to her had all my new seeds in it! She was working up an appetite.... soon after this picture was taken she raided the food table!

Some of the seeds on the table early on in the swap. There was way more than this.

This was the look I got when I said their was fresh coffee and food over on the tables across the room! LOL She loved the soups and all the other treats as well!

Khaiti  visiting with friends. She brought sunflowers- she is taking the seed out of them. I was lucky to get some of these awesome seeds. Thanks!

Doesn't it make you want to plant a garden? Know where your food is coming from? Get in the soil and just get your hands dirty? Oh I can't wait!!!

Thanks for hosting the seed swap!!!!!
