Spooner Advocate- Springbrook/Trego Column, October 8, 2015

Good morning. Wow! I know it isn't even really that cold out there, mid 50's to low 60's is not cold in the big picture. But man it feels very cold when you first go out your door and the cold air hits you in your face! Wow! I will try and stay positive.... it is refreshing, exhilarating! But I am just going to say it I LOVE fall...but dread winter. So I will enjoy and cherish the leaves that have turned.I will talk to the birds that continue to fly over the house on there way to destination unknown. I was happy to have some cranes come and visit with me in my pasture this year. Sure hope they come back as they are awesome!

We had an awesome writers weekend hosted by Trish and Carol at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College this last weekend. Lots of us rediscovered our inner voice and found that our stories did still flow out of us if we took the time to stop moving long enough to actually listen and write them down. It was great to meet Ryan Winn who is a Professor at the College of Menominee Nation. Some of you might know him from helping write plays about and with various Indian Nations. Some might know him for his writings in the Tribal College Journal. A HUGE thank you goes out to the Oneida Nation Arts Program that helped make this possible. More info can be found at www.oneidanationsart.org or at www.menominee.edu or atwww.tcjstudent.org.

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- November 13, 2014

Good day friends-  Snow! All I can say is do we have to get it all in one big dump! LOL Please be careful out there! Drive safe, put your winter kits in the car and a blanket and shovel. If you do not need to go out please don't!

Happy Veterans Day to all the Vets and their families! Thank you so much for what you have done for this country as well as for my family. Freedom does not come free and I would just like to personally say thank you for all that you have done or are about to do. My dad served this country and I never was really able to spend a Veterans Day with him. So I would like to say a big thank you to some of my military friends Mark Mc Connell, Doug Houn, Juanita Thompson, Cris Marlow- I appreciate all that you and your family have gone through with being in the military.

I want to wish all the hunters out there good luck! Please be careful and really pay attention to your surroundings and who and what is around you. I already hard of someone that fell out of their stand because of faulty equipment and someone who shot a bow hunter cuz he thought he was a squirrel. Check your equipment before you need to use it and replace it if faulty. Know who is around you and know what you are shooting before you shoot.  Have a successful hunting season! Fill those freezers up!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column, November 6, 2014

Good day friends-  Sorry I missed last week. School and work have been kicking my backside and there never seems to be enough time in a day to get everything done. I hear other people talking about this too so I guess I cam not the only one that is feeling this. I do have to say that I am glad its a little lighter out there now that we have fallen back an hour. I seem to drag myself around when it is dark in the morning and dark early in the night and then dark all day long! LOL

I want to wish all the hunters out there good luck! Please be careful and really pay attention to your surroundings and who and what is around you. I already hard of someone that fell out of their stand because of faulty equipment and someone who shot a bow hunter cuz he thought he was a squirrel. Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College is hosting a College Fair and Higher Education Youth Experience on Thursday November 6, 2014. It will be held in the Cultural Resource Center and the Student Center from 9:30- 2:30 PM. This is a great event for high schools to bring the future students to LCO and see what they want to do when they graduate. There will be representatives from other Colleges and Universities that will be here to answer questions and give people some direction. Sure would like it if the Homeschooling groups out there came and checked out the fair! Everyone is welcome here at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College- you do not need to be Ojibwe to attend LCO! Hope to see you there,

Does anyone out there have sewing/quilting items that they are no longer using? Reason I ask is that we have been holding sewing classes at the college and there are always people that do not have a machine. If you would like to donate anything like this just let me know and I can figure a time to pick it up. I know I am a sewing machine collector- I have an old singer (doesn't work), my Grandma Andre's machine, and the machine my friend Anita gave me- this is an oldie but goodie and what I sew on! Anita gave me this machine when I decided to get back into quilting- she also shared a rotary cutter and mat with me! She is awesome!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- July 10, 2014

Good day friends-The sun is out and there is a breeze. This is good being we are suppose to heat up and well I am not looking forward to that! The weather sure has been up and down so I am hoping everyone has survived the storms without getting to many trees down! The winds sure have been crazy! Hope the gardens are growing good.

Mikhaila's graduation party went well. We had it over in Minnesota so that the family would not have to come all the way over here. We both enjoyed visiting with our guests and just visiting! Mikhaila loved all the cards and gifts she has been receiving! Thank you all for taking the time to some to the party, visiting, or sending a card! We appreciate it!

So here is a question for all of you... who reads the Farmer's Almanac? Which one do you read? I usually go with the
Old Farmer's Almanac from Robert B. Thomas, started in 1792. It seems like alot of people read and prefer this one. Any input on this? Why do people like this one better? Is it more accurate? I recently purchased the Harris Farmer's Almanac first published in 1692. I got it for the articles in it, also they did not have  the Old Farmer's Almanac. In the Harris almanac they had a great story about a dog that had been adopted from an animal rescue (he was recycled by getting a  new family) and then he has learned to pick up bottles and plastic to be recycled. It was a great story which always touches my heart as most of our animals are ones that have come to live with us after having other owners. Anyway if you want to go check out more on the dog in the article go to www. maxapooch.com.

Thank you for the call from the folks in Earl that may have seen our cat! I will be coming through there to see if I can find her. Cats are so elusive, they do not feel the need to check in and they have their own agenda!  If anyone could catch her that would be wonderful! LOL Any info, please give us a ring.

The rains have helped green things up that is for sure! Have a wonderful birthday and I hope it is happy and that you do something fun! Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- June 12, 2014

Good day friends- Did anyone go to the Spooner Garden Club plant sale this last Saturday? I have to say it was a wet morning, but the folks out there were soooo cheerful, even though I know they were cold and wet! Mikhaila saw the ad for the sale and said we had to stop by to see what they had! I am glad she saw the ad as I thought it was last weekend! I think I have a gardener in the house and she may not be completely aware that she has been bitten by the plant bug! So we did get some awesome plants, I got some Dahlias! I am so excited! I am going to get them started in the house and then go from there. I need to do some research on them again. I got bit by the Dahlia bug a couple years back at the MN State Fair, well also out at the Arboretum.  I really would like to row a bunch of varieties and see what ones do best here. Does anyone out there have any advice for me? Suggestions? Mikhaila got some Irises! Had to laugh as she said they were going to be her project this year! If anyone knows me I am an Iris fan, my dad always like tulips- not me I like Irises! It was great to meet these folks from the Spooner Garden Club- Mikhaila was able to tell them thank you in person for the Scholarship that she received from them! We would also like to send a big thank you to the Spooner/ Trego Lions Club for the other scholarship that Mikhaila has received! Both of these are organizations that we support. Thank you to all the members out there!

I will be holding a plant swap at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College Farm,  on June 14, 2014 from 10:00-1:00pm. If you have plants that you do not need please bring them, you can swap for another plant or just drop them off for others to take, if you have seeds as well that you would like to share please bring them. If any one has black plastic pots, flat trays or anything else that they are not going to use please bring them with, they will be cleaned up and reused next planting season! If nothing else come and chat with us gardeners. The Farm is located at 13457W Frommel Road. If you need directions give me a call.

Happy Birthday to all the folks born in June! I remember growing up and always wishing my birthday was in a warm month! I thought it would be great to have people over for swimming and a cook out- this is kind of hard to do in February! I wish each of you a lovely day doing whatever makes you happy!   Remember we love you! Hugs to each of you!
