Hello there friends- I have a BIG problem with a little name.....FOX! Can I just whine a minute? I LOVE the fox, they are beautiful, I smile everytime I see the babies in the spring. However, he is taking too many of my animals to make me a happy farmer. So I am going to ask folks here some questions, what is a decent gun to have on the farm for overall needs- I am assuming a .22. Is there one brand/make better than another? Also any suggestion on live traps? What do you use for baiting a fox? A live chicken- which than will be tramatized for life? I know I need both, but to tell you the truth this is not a good time financially to be buying anything!I know there are some hunter/ trappers out there with a wealth of info so please call/text/email me. Farm Fresh Now! From the Land Connection Foundation....

The Incredible, Edible Eggplant As a child, I often wondered what sort of monstrous creature would lay a huge, purple-black egg, for surely the eggplant was named after such an egg laid by such a creature. Imagine my relief, tinged with disappointment, when I eventually learned that the first eggplants, grown in China, were small, ivory, and egg-shaped, with a delicate pearly skin--just like an ordinary egg. Eggplant Far and Wide From China, the eggplant spread all over the world, gradually acquiring the deep, lustrous colors we are most familiar with today. Today, the eggplant has come full circle, with local farmers growing many of the long, narrow Asian varieties, which range in color from solid purple, lavender, or green to striated shades of purple and white. These eggplants have tender skins and slightly sweet flesh, and cook up quickly and easily on the grill or in a pan. Low-Calorie, High Nutritional Value Eggplant does have a sponge-like capacity to soak up oil, but that shouldn't keep you away from a vegetable that has only 25 calories per half cup serving, and is extremely mineral rich with healthy doses of potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. Eggplant is the main ingredient in many popular dishes around the world: caponata and eggplant parmigiana in Italy; ratatouille in France; baba ghanoush in the Middle East, and grilled with soy sauce or garlic in many Asian countries. So find some fresh, glossy-skinned eggplants from a local farmer, and give these recipes a try. Sauteed Asian Eggplant Ingredients 2 or 3 Asian eggplants (about a pound) 2 tablespoons peanut oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon shrimp paste (optional) Salt and pepper to taste Instructions Cut eggplant in half lengthwise, and then into 2 inch pieces. Heat the oil, and then fry the garlic and shrimp paste for about 2 minutes. Add the eggplant and soy sauce. Cover and simmer 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Can be added to pasta or rice as a meal, or eaten alone as a side. Seasonal Cook's Notes: You can counter the tendency eggplant has for soaking up oil by coating slices in a thin batter or crumb mixture before frying. Or start by sauteeing eggplant with a few tablespoons of oil, and then add water or broth, and braise until it's meltingly tender and delicious. Serves 4 as a side dish, or 2 as a main course. The Land Connection Foundation The best way to enjoy healthy, seasonal produce is to buy it from your local community farmer. To locate the farmers' market or CSA nearest you, visit www.localharvest.org. Farm Fresh Now! is a project of The Land Connection, an educational nonprofit that preserves farmland, trains new farmers, and connects people with great locally-grown foods. This series is made possible with generous support from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Banners on Main street in Cable...... go check out before August 24th!

Gallery on Main Street
CHARAC is bringing Art to the Streets of Cable!
Twenty-four (24) talented local artists will be featured in a variety of colorful images to brighten up the village streets.  The banners will go up on the utility poles throughout the community the last week of May and will remain through August 24th.
To launch this event, CHARAC is hosting an Opening Reception on May 31 from 5-8 pm at Rivers Eatery in Cable.  There will be art, artists, sponsors, music, and a special menu available that night.  Do join us!
Then all of the original art will be displayed at Rondeau’s throughout the summer.  Just go left as you enter their store through the hardware/housewares section and take your opportunity to see the art that inspired the banners.
A special thanks to the Cable business community. With their generous support, CHARAC and its member artists have helped turn the whole town into a work of art.
The art will also be available, the original and the banner, for you to purchase by bidding online.  The auction will go “live” May 31, after the Opening Reception. http://www.cablehaywardarts.org/events/gallery-on-main/

On the Bookshelf....The Icecutter's Daughter by Tracie Peterson July 14,2013

What is on the bookshelf here at the Lampert Home?

Well right now I am currently reading The Icecutter's Daughter by Tracie Peterson.

I have to say that I love to read a good book. In the past I have read Tracie Peterson's books and I can't ever remember being disappointed.

I was interested in reading this book as the main character Merrill is a strong woman, taking care of her brothers and father in 1895.
The book draws you in as you are wondering what has happened to put Merrill in this position of taking care of her family. You wonder what she really wants out of her life, is she happy with what has happened. Does she want kids and a husband? Where would she find someone, would her family let her get married if she did find someone acceptable? I found that I can symphathize with her and her situation very easily.

The bonus for me is that it is set in Minnesota! Being I am from Minnesota I really like to read books that are based in my home area. Makes the book really come to life for me!

I really enjoyed this book, it was a book that you wanted to start and keep reading until it was done. I would recommend reading this book or buy one for a gift.

I did receive this book free of charge. All that Bethany House asked me to do was to post an honest book review to my blog.

Spooner Advocate Column- June 27, 2013

Hello there neighbor- Well it is either raining or it is 85 in the shade. It is one of these summers I guess! I am still trying to get my own garden in and well it has been a struggle! I have gotten most of the tools and the plants to all the outreach sites that I am planting community gardens at- they are not all planted at this time. But they have the tools and if it stays nice and stops raining we should have them planted this week! Please say a prayer for me as I am doing alot of traveling and well there have been obstacles so just pray it all goes good.

Musky Fest was this weekend in Hayward and it sure looked like there was alot of people in town for the events. I sure hope all the visitors have fun while they are in our great state of WI. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! I have to say a BIG thank you to all the people that helped put on the Sawyer County Dairy Breakfast at the Hayward fairgrounds! You all did a wonderful job! It was a bit rainy but hey none of us melted and we warmed up with a yummy breakfast. It is always fun to meet up with old friends-Teresa from Springbrook Organic Dairy, as always she had her wonderful products with for all of us to enjoy! It was fun to meet up with the Anderson family from Springbrook and eat breakfast with them. It always amazes Deb and I how much food Kaelon and Mikhaila can put away. They both have hollow legs and of course they are always on the go. Larry and the Drifters were very good to listen too- they were even doing requests! Overall it was a great time and thanks again to all the people that work so hard to get this put together every year!

Spooner Advocate Column- June 20, 2013

Hello there neighbor- I hope all the dads out there had a wonderful day yesterday! We had nice weather so maybe some people were out fishing or working in the garden. Speaking of fishing, anybody out there have some extra fishing poles sitting around? I would really like to teach my daughter how to fish and actually learn again myself.... I haven't fished since my grandmother and I dug a can full of worms and had cane poles! Years have gone by, but I have some fond memories of that time. I thank you in advance for any fishing tips- I am feeling pretty clueless.....but I did get the book from the DNR so I will start reading that. Can't believe that it is almost the end of June! Where has the summer gone? I sure hope everyone is having fun while they are in our great state of WI. We welcome all of you out of towners back to the cabins. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! Happy Birthday to all those of you that have June birthdays. The poor Robins were not happy at all- seemed like they gave me dirty looks when I saw them. I suppose its hard to find worms when 14 or more inches of snowed are dumped on the ground. Everyone seems to be singing a happier toon now that the sun is out and most of the snow is gone. A big Happy Mother's Day to all of you out there. I hear it should be a good weekend as far as weather so safe travels to all. Remember to thank all your Aunts and other female family members as I am sure somewhere along the way they have "mothered" you in some way. Remember it takes a village to raise a child!
