Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column - August 28, 2014

Good day friends- Are we enjoying this weather? It sure is strange isn't it? The rainstorm last night was nice and it sure was muggy out there yesterday! I sure hope that no one had bad weather as there were tornado warning out for some of our counties as well as MN. I am not fond of tornadoes- been in one to many dangerous ones!

How are the gardens coming? Seems like everything is late this year. Plus some things have been washed out and will not becoming back! Any canners out there? I hope I am not the only one! I would like to make some corn cob jelly- I know it sounds weird but hey I want to see if I can use all the product up. Anyone else out there ever eaten this or made it?  If you  have extra produce I hope you share it with friends.

Dave Parker from the Springbrook VFW gave me a call to let everyone know about Springbrook Days! They are being held Saturday, August 30th in the town of Springbrook. The VFW will have a slip and slide, bouncy house, and they would like to do a parade again. The VFW will be having a BBQ Pork Feed from 12-2 or so.... Adults are $8.00 and kids are $5.00. This is always a really good time, so come out and show your local area your support! If you have questions or would like to sign up to be in the parade please give the VFW a call at 715-766-2128
My U of M-Duluth Bulldog will be leaving soon! We are busy packing and man it is kind of hard. Been with this snotty nose kid for so long I wonder what it will be like to live by myself! LOL Of course I am not by myself with all the animals I have, but still not all of them walk around saying mmmaaaaaaa this and mmmaaaaa that! She leaves on Thursday so please keep us in prayer.

Good luck to all the Hayward and Spooner graduates that are going on to school or working! I hope this is a great time in your life!  Please be safe as you go out into the big world, ask for help if you need it and enjoy it! You are only this age once!

The Healing Quilt by Wanda Brunstetter

Well Wanda has done another wonderful book! I always love to read her books, but I have to have a clear day to read it right through! I always want to find out what is going to happen! Her stories always suck me in!

Lamar and Emma Yoder Miller are living in Florida during the winter months as Lamar has trouble with arthritis.Emma enjoys the warmer weather but is missing her family, friends and one of her favorite past times...quilting. Lamar suggests that to pass the time maybe they could teach a quilting class in their new home.

A real mixture of all walks of life come together for this special quilting class. Each one has their own struggle- new baby, illness, workaholic, relationships, challenges. All are having many problems that they can not get a grip on but when they start the quilting class they seem to have help not only from Emma and Lamar but also from God.

I really like the way Wanda blends everyday problems that are occurring with many people all over the country and spins hope into those situations with prayer. She shows that even when we are at the bottom we can pray about our issues as well as help others out with theirs. Our problems do not always get "fixed" the way that we think they will. Life takes us on many twists and turns and many times it isn't fair. However; if we look at each new day as a gift and look past our problems many times we can see a different view- and help someone else.

I would suggest giving this book a read. Be prepared to want to help someone and to learn how to quilt! Thanks  to Shiloh Run Press for the copy of this book. All they ask for is a book review to be posted. This as all Wanda Brunstetter books is a good read!

Lost and Found: Finding Hope in the Detours of Life by Sarah Jakes

This was a very interesting book.I thought it might be really different as her father is a well known man, I thought that it would be more "religious" for lack of a better word!

Sarah was very down to earth and honest which I found very refreshing. I like that she explained what she was thinking as she did things and you could feel her struggle for making those decisions. She was brought up with a very religious family; which on the one hand can really make things hard. I think having this background is what kept her from totally straying away from those that she loved.I was happy to see that the family did not turn their back on her or her new family. They were there to support her but not to make her do things their way. She had to learn things in her own time as well as her own way.

I was glad that Sarah also showed that although people may claim to be religious, saved again people. They are still human, and are ready to pass judgement even when it is not their place to do so. You can feel the shame and pain that these people inflicted not only on Sarah but her whole family. I think we as humans think it is our right to judge and expect people to  act a certain way and when they don't they get their nose out of joint and think they they are better. What we fail to realize is that sin is sin, there is nothing in the bible that says one thing is better or worse than the other. So when a Christian gets righteous about someone having a child out of wedlock when they themselves are doing something as simple as a "little white lie". They are walking on slippery ground and should get straight with God.

If you can I would highly suggest giving this book a read. Thank you Bethany House Publishing for sending me a free copy. This is my honest opinion of the book.
