Spooner Advocate- Springbrook/Trego Column- August 7, 2014

Good day friends- Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.I have to say I was really lazy all weekend long and did not get too much done around here! Oh well! Dishes and laundry will never be completely done! LOL I am hoping we get some rain today. There was a light sprinkle yesterday, I really thought we were going to get nailed as fast as it came up! The chickens are getting bigger, soon some will lay eggs.... I am eggcited!

The Sawyer County Fair is right around the corner, August 14-17th!!  We always go and have a wonderful time!They need some volunteers to make the  fair go along a little more smoothly. If you can help volunteer please call Kelly Froemel at 715-699-6015. Mikhaila  and I have had fun volunteering at the fair in the past, matter of fact I better get on the phone and call Kelly! Deb over at the Thimbles Quilt Shop wants folks to know that there is still some openings in her quilting class called "Deck the Halls", which starts soon. Happy Birthday to all the August birthdays out there!  Happy birthday to my darling daughter Mikhaila who turns 18 on the 15th! I can't believe it has been 18 years that I have had the privilege to be your mother!  I am so proud of the wonderful young lady you have become. Happy Birthday to the President of the United States! Happy birthday to Roma Eder, hope your birthday is great! Have a wonderful birthday readers and I hope it is happy and that you do something fun!  Remember we love you! Hugs!

Hello there friend- August is here! Happy Birthday to all the August birthday people. I have to say a BIG Happy Birthday to my daughter who will be 17 on the 15th. I can't believe it has been that long since she was a little baby! The time sure does fly. I hope everyone has a wonderful birthday and we love you! The 2013 Hayward Quilt Show was this last weekend and I have to say that it was a great show. We had some rain but that did not keep people away. Thank you to all the people that came to see all the beautiful items that were proudly displayed.We appreciate you coming to support the show and the vendors. Congrats to all the raffle winners, silent auction winners and most of all to all the talented people that exhibited their wonderful items. Each of you is really talented and we are grateful that you share your talent with all of us. We would like to invite anyone interested in quilting to come to one of our meetings. New local Cooperative Artist Gallery, Art Market 63 has opened at 42790 Hwy 63 South. It’s just 1 mile south of Cable on Highway 63 in the bright red building with plenty of parking. Spooner Advocate Column- July 25,2013

Hello there friend-Were you able to get out and enjoy the cooler weather? I was really happy when the cooler weather rolled in as we were at the LCO Pow-wow all weekend. I have to say it was quite a turnout and everyone had a great time! The Aztec dancers were very cool too see all dressed up and well... what a dance! So much energy! I would never make it through just one of their dances!

Spooner Advocate Column- June 27, 2013

Hello there neighbor- Well it is either raining or it is 85 in the shade. It is one of these summers I guess! I am still trying to get my own garden in and well it has been a struggle! I have gotten most of the tools and the plants to all the outreach sites that I am planting community gardens at- they are not all planted at this time. But they have the tools and if it stays nice and stops raining we should have them planted this week! Please say a prayer for me as I am doing alot of traveling and well there have been obstacles so just pray it all goes good.
 
Musky Fest was this weekend in Hayward and it sure looked like there was alot of people in town for the events. I sure hope all the visitors have fun while they are in our great state of WI. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! Please have a safe vacation while you are here.

I have to say a BIG thank you to all the people that helped put on the Sawyer County Dairy Breakfast at the Hayward fairgrounds! You all did a wonderful job! It was a bit rainy but hey none of us melted and we warmed up with a yummy breakfast. It is always fun to meet up with old friends-Teresa from Springbrook Organic Dairy, as always she had her wonderful products with for all of us to enjoy! It was fun to meet up with the Anderson family from Springbrook and eat breakfast with them. It always amazes Deb and I how much food Kaelon and Mikhaila can put away. They both have hollow legs and of course they are always on the go. Larry and the Drifters were very good to listen too- they were even doing requests! Overall it was a great time and thanks again to all the people that work so hard to get this put together every year!

Spooner Advocate Column- August 9, 2012

Good morning Neighbors- Have you been enjoying the cooler weather? I have to say it has been delightful to feel cold!  My body was so adjusted to it being so hot and humid that ewhen it finally cooled off I was actually cold. The animals are happy that it  is cooler thats for sure. Also it helps make it alot more enjoyable to can and freeze food when you aer not so hot and miserable. Have you been putting any food up? Do you have any recipes you would like to share? I know I have to apple sauce for sure this year, we are completely out. Also carmel apple jam and then I have a whole list of recipes that I want to try out. Just got some Beet pickles done yesterday- I do love a good beet!

Sawyer County Fair is right around the corner- August 16-19, 2012-Hayward, WI. Did you get all your registration paperwork in? How about volunteering at the fair this year? Remember by going to these events the VFW is able to support our community through donations to places like the Washburn County Food Shelf. Please go and show support for all the great work that the Springbrook VFW has been able to do.


I saw in The Country Today that a wonderful business had been written about from our neck of the woods. Farmstead Creamery and Cafe, which is located at N11077 Fullington Road East, Hayward has opened their Cafe and I can tell you that the food there is awesome! We had a wonderful cup of coffee, a taste chicken enchilada, a fresh salad grown right there as well as a piece of blueberry that was delicious right down to the crust! My daughter had a brownie with ganache frosting that she oohed and ahhed over the entire time she at it! The Berlages- Ann, Kara, Laura run a wonderful farm- where alot of the food comes from that they use in their cafe food. The farm has  a CSA (Community Supported Ag) that people can buy a share of and have farm fresh food grown by someone you know and respect. They also sell in the cafe eggs, produce from the farm as well as some lovely hand made knitting items. Our own Springbrook Organic Dairy sells their milk, as well as their terrific drinkable yogurts at the Farmstead. I just heard from a friend that Log Cabin Soaps is also pairing up with the Farmstead so you can get some wonderful soaps for yourself as well as for gifts. It really is worth the trip over to have a great cup of coffee and a baked good treat and chat with the Berlage family. Soon they will be able to serve yiou uo a Gelato as well. Just a reminder that Aug 12th is the Family Range Day Camp held over at Indianhead Rifle and Pistol Club on Cty Highway A. THe hours are 11 am -3pm. Lunch will be served from Noon- 3 pm. The entire family can participate in shooting trap, 22-rifle and pistol, archery, black powder rifle with supervision stressing safety froim NRA instructors. Sounds like alot of fun!  Free ammunition as well as free use of guns and bows will be provided. This is put together by a bunch of volunteers and some wonderful sponsors- thanks too all of you! When you go out there make sure you tell all the volunteers thank you for investing in the future generation of hunters. Hello there neighbors!

Did you get to the Washburn County Fair? Did you have fun? Congrats to all the exhibitors and people that had animals to share with everyone! You guys are all winners just for taking the time to learn something new and to share that with people you don't even know. Just think you may have inspired someone to garden, sew, or paint. That is an awesome thing if you think of it! Have you started working on things for next year? How about trying something new to you? Go on get out of your comfort zone and try something new.... I double dog dare you. =)

Remember to get your entries in for the Sawyer County Fair- August 16-19,2012-Hayward, WI. All registrations need to be in by August 3rd- that is THIS friday!! During my busy schedule I was able to go see the Piecemakers Quilt Show on Friday night. I met some lovely ladies that belong to the Piecemakers Quilt Guild. They were super sympathetic as I was having one of those days with work, a farm and a 15 year old daughter.... need I say more? So I was SO HAPPY that there was a quilt show as that is pretty cheap therapy! I got to see some of my favorite ladies Kathleen from Heartlight Quilt Shop in Ladysmith as well as Sandy from Bolts of Fun in Thorp! I have to say it was a great quilt show, lots of beautiful projects! I was very inspired by these beautiful hankie quilts a lady did in remembrance of a loved one.  I have some hankies from my grandma that I want to put into something, there is only acouple so this gave me an idea on how to maybe do a smaller project with them. Although I do want to do a butterfly quilt and that I will need alot of fancy old time hankies for..... Does anyone have any that they would like to share with me? Piecemakers meets at the wonderful library in Hayward on the second Monday at 10:15 until 8 at night. That means the 13th will be the next meeting, how about coming to meet with some other quilters? If you have something to share please bring it or if you are having a problem with a project I am sure you can get some help from these knowledgeable woman.  To become a member of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild all it takes is $15! Spooner Advocate Column- June 28, 2012

Hello there neighbors. Wow are you as busy as I feel I am? Seems there is always something to do or to go check out. This was one of those weekends where there was plenty to choose from!
This was the last weekend of the Wi Quilt Shop Hop, if you went around the state looking at the different stores were you surprised how different they all were? How about the great folks that worked at them? Talk about some really wonderful people! Also talk about goodies to drool over! Wow! I was really good and really just focused on getting the blocks that the stores offered and looking at the different projects that everyone had to offer. Don't worry I took notes on what I want and who had it! LOL Two of my favorite new stores are Heartlight Quilt Shop in Ladysmith- You can get hold of Kathleen at www.heartlighthouse.com and Bolts of Fun Quilt Shop in Thorp- you can get ahold of Sandy at www.boltsoffun.com. Yes they are alittle ways away. However they are both worth the drive! Sandy has the cutest dog! Kathleen has amazing old quilts all over her porches!

A big thank you goes out to all the folks that helped put the Sawyer County Breakfast together. Wow they really did a great job getting all of us through the food lines! I was amazed how many people showed up as it was raining- however that did not dampen anyone's spirits! We met some new people at the breakfast, even someone who reads my column, hi Phyllis! Such a small world we live in! It saddens me that the dairy breakfasts are now over for the year- it does make me start dreaming about next year tho! I don't know why the food taste so much better when someone else cooks it or when you eat it outside! I look forward to seeing you all again next year! Remember to thank the farmers for all their hard work when you see them!

Speaking of things that are held only once a year I hope you have your projects ready for the Washburn County Fair! The fair is right around the corner July 26-29, 2012 at the Washburn Fair Grounds in Spooner. You can get all the  entry forms on the computer at  www.washburncountyfair.com, the registration deadline is July 13. If you are going to be submitting entries for the Sawyer County Fair, the fair runs August 16-19, 2012 in Hayward. The registration deadline is August 3, 2012 and all the info and forms can be found at www.sawyercountyfair.org. We are big supporters of local fairs and have been entering projects in them for 10 years now- its not just for the young kids you know! Hope this is the year you take  the big step and enter something, you will have fun doing it  and you might even win a ribbon! See you at the fair!

A big thank you goes out to the Shuman Cattle Company in Hayward. They had us all out for a pasture walk on Sat and about 70+ people showed up! They have some beautiful animals, very calm for animals that size! Tweed and his family did a great job at making us feel welcome, showing us around the farm, letting us see how they still use horses to move the cattle and letting us ask questions! They served a delicious lunch for all that attended as well! Great job guys! Thanks for hosting a pasture walk!
