Chi-Miigwech to all the people who danced, volunteered, worked the event. Thank you to the Veterans that were there! Chi- Miigwech to Black Bear Casino and all the employees!

Spooner Advocate - Springbrook Column, October 23, 2014

Good day friends-  Hope that everyone  is enjoying the fall weather. The trees sure were beautiful this year! But they sure seemed to turn quickly! I think the whole summer and fall has gone by in a blur! I have to say I am not looking forward to the cold weather that is going to be coming soon! No way! Is everyone ready for the snow when it comes?

Today would have been my dad's 75th birthday. Its hard to believe that he has been gone for 19 years already. My daughter was born the year after he passed away. It is sad sometimes to think of all the things I missed out on with my dad being he passed so early. If you have someone in your own life that means alot to you please let them know, they will not be here forever. Life really is too short to live like there is always a tomorrow.... sometimes there is not one!

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College is hosting a College Fair and Higher Education Youth Experience on Thursday November 6, 2014. It will be held in the Cultural Resource Center and the Student Center from 9:30- 2:30 PM. This is a great event for high schools to bring the future students to LCO and see what they want to do when they graduate. There will be representatives from other Colleges and Universities that will be here to answer questions and give people some direction. Sure would like it if the Homeschooling groups out there came and checked out the fair! Everyone is welcome here at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College- you do not need to be Ojibwe to attend LCO! Hope to see you there,

Sherrine called and wanted to let the area know that they are sorry but there will not be a harvest supper this fall at the Namekagon Congregational Church in Earl. They are unable to get it together as they are an older congregation and their church numbers are down. They would all like to thank you for your support in the past!

Do you know anyone that would like to get their GED? Maybe its you that would like to get your GED and go on to take some college classes. Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College is both a place where you can study for your  GED as well as test for it. f you would like more information please call 715-634-4790 and ask for Nicole.

Strange request but if there are any hunters or trappers out there that do not want their hides, bear fat, feathers, etc please let them know I would be interested. I use various things in soaps, lotions and beaded items. Also anyone have any porcupine quills. I appreciate any help!

Does anyone out there have sewing/quilting items that they are no longer using? Reason I ask is that we have been holding sewing classes at the college and there are always people that do not have a machine. If you would like to donate anything like this just let me know and I can figure a time to pick it up. I know I am a sewing machine collector- I have an old singer (doesn't work), my Grandma Andre's machine, and the machine my friend Anita gave me- this is an oldie but goodie and what I sew on! Anita gave me this machine when I decided to get back into quilting- she also shared a rotary cutter and mat with me! She is awesome!

Wow can you believe it is already time to celebrate those October birthdays! I love October and all the fun fall things to! If you have a birthday this month know that you are blessed to be born in a wonderful fall month! Happy birthday to my step dad Robert, my sister, my mother, my cousin Michelle. Happy birthday to all you October folks- have a beautiful day and remember we love you! Hugs!

Spooner Advocate- Springbrook Column- July 10, 2014

Good day friends-The sun is out and there is a breeze. This is good being we are suppose to heat up and well I am not looking forward to that! The weather sure has been up and down so I am hoping everyone has survived the storms without getting to many trees down! The winds sure have been crazy! Hope the gardens are growing good.

Mikhaila's graduation party went well. We had it over in Minnesota so that the family would not have to come all the way over here. We both enjoyed visiting with our guests and just visiting! Mikhaila loved all the cards and gifts she has been receiving! Thank you all for taking the time to some to the party, visiting, or sending a card! We appreciate it!

So here is a question for all of you... who reads the Farmer's Almanac? Which one do you read? I usually go with the
Old Farmer's Almanac from Robert B. Thomas, started in 1792. It seems like alot of people read and prefer this one. Any input on this? Why do people like this one better? Is it more accurate? I recently purchased the Harris Farmer's Almanac first published in 1692. I got it for the articles in it, also they did not have  the Old Farmer's Almanac. In the Harris almanac they had a great story about a dog that had been adopted from an animal rescue (he was recycled by getting a  new family) and then he has learned to pick up bottles and plastic to be recycled. It was a great story which always touches my heart as most of our animals are ones that have come to live with us after having other owners. Anyway if you want to go check out more on the dog in the article go to www. maxapooch.com.

Thank you for the call from the folks in Earl that may have seen our cat! I will be coming through there to see if I can find her. Cats are so elusive, they do not feel the need to check in and they have their own agenda!  If anyone could catch her that would be wonderful! LOL Any info, please give us a ring.

Can you believe it is July!!!! Where has the time gone?? If you are born this month I hope you enjoy having a birthday that is warm, sunny and where there are alot of flowers and plants growing! Spooner Advocate Column- December 6, 2012

Good Morning their friends- Sorry for missing the column last week,  with a broke down car I was not able to make it into town to get this to the Advocate. Don’t you just love how dependent we are on technology?? A huge thank you goes out to the Tripp family for helping me out with transportation, I appreciate neighbors like you!

So here I sit with a car that will not run. What am I to do? First I have to just think, well it could be worse. I am stranded at home, not on the road. Does it put a crimp in my day? Sure does! I am glad my daughter rides the school bus- I used to drive her into school everyday- at least that is not on my plate today. What do others do when they are without  a car? A lot of people do not have a car at all. What do they do?? So I called Namekagon Transit, they are the little white buses that you see going around from Hayward to Spooner, other destinations. So if you are like me and are having an issue with your car, or if you are carless- you can call Namekagon and schedule a ride. You do have to call 24 hours in advance to set-up a pick-up, the lady I talked to was very nice and walked me through the process. I have to say I think the price is good, I just wanted to let people know that this is an option. You never know when you would like to do some shopping or have an appointment and can’t get a ride with someone you know. To schedule a pick-up call 715-634-6633 or toll-free 866-295-9599

Spooner Memorial Library will be host a book launch and signing party on December 13, from 4-6 pm at the library, 421 High Street in Spooner, for Washburn County Historical Society's newest edition of county history. Volume V in the " Historical Collections of Washburn County and the Surrounding Indianhead Country." I am told by Sharon Tarr that one whole section of the book is made up of stories about Springbrook history and families! If you can't make the launch party but still want a copy you may purchase one at the Washburn County Information Center in Spooner, also at the Washburn County Historical Museum in Shell Lake or by calling the Museum at 715-468-2982. Thanks so much for sending me the info Sharon.

I pray all the deer hunters had a great hunt. Hopefully a lot of deer were harvested to get folks through the winter. Nothing like a good pot of venison stew when it gets cold.

The Palace Theatre in Spooner are having a free admission  movie every Sat @ 1:00 pm. You do have to pick up a ticket from a business in town, Northwinds, Cat’s Meow, Spooner Advocate, Economart are just a few places to get tickets. Box 356, Stone Lake, WI 54876 Please make the check out  to The Lakes Community Co-op and put “feed-a family” on the memo line. Last year 65 families received groceries and 75 seniors received fruit baskets from this wonderful program. If you or someone you know would benefit from this program please give Jim at The Lakes Community Co-op a call 715- 865-6989. Also if you know any youths that are in need of a hat, gloves, jacket or boots you can let Jim know that as well or call Marie’s Hide-away- the sooner the better!

The Christmas Fund is also accepting donations of money, new toys and new clothing at Spooner Advocate, Shell Lake State Bank, Washburn County Register, and Indianhead Credit Union. If you would like to send a monetary donation in please mail it to Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 321, Spooner, WI 54801. If you are in need of help please fill out an application before Dec 12th, to receive help you need to reside in either the Spooner or Shell Lake School District. Forms can be picked up at Washburn County Register, Spooner Advocate, Washburn County Food Pantry, Washburn County Human Service Office in Shell Lake or Washburn County Public Health in Spooner. Delivery will be on Friday Dec 21st  from 9-1pm and an adult (or the recipients) will have to be there to accept.

I hope each of you are having fun getting ready for the holidays. Please keep in mind that it is not all about the gifts. Being with family, spending time with friends  is the greatest gift you can give someone. Homemade gifts are wonderful to make with the kids and are a great to receive!

Spooner Advocate Column- July 26,2012

Good morning neighbors!
Wow it is a hot one out there already, suppose to go up to 89! I hope everyone is being smart in the heat, drinking lots of water, stay cool- air is wonderful but even with a fan on and a wet towel around the shoulders will help! Keep your windows closed and curtains closed. Remember if you are feeling weird, sick, not the normal way you always feel call for help. Check on people as well as all those animals that are out there- they need shade and water! Be smart... stay safe.

Our prayers go out to Barb Atkinson's family, her brother passed away from the heat last week.

A big thank you goes out to Sandy and Len Sheehan of Whispering Oaks Equine Center, Hayward for hosting a horse pasture walk on July 21. The Sheehans have a wonderful set-up over there for boarding about 40 horses, large indoor arena, nice big pastures. We were very impressed how very professional, clean and inviting their set-up is. Makes you want to have a horse to board over there just so you can go ride the trails! Thanks again for having us all out to the farm!

On the weekend of July 14th the Springbrook VFW had a big event to raise money for the local Washburn Food Pantry. The Springbrook VFW, which is a chartered organization that is made up of volunteers who are Veterans  that were in combat zones, host different venues to raise money for various organizations. The organization has donated various monetary amounts to Scholarships for Seniors, Spooner Girl Soccer Team, Vetereans that need help just to name a few. They  have also volunteered hours cleaning the railroad tracks right there in Springbrook. This last fundraiser was for the Washburn County Food Shelf. They had 5 bands, 2 guitarist who entertained over 500 people. It seems like everyone had a good time listening to the wonderful music and  listen to Larry and the Drifters until the bugs drove them inside! We appreciate all the volunteers that make things like this possible, thanks to all the bands that come out to entertain everyone with their talent! Without all of you things like this would not be possible. Springbrook VFW were happy to donate a pickup truck full of food as well as $1500.00 to the food shelf, so far to date they have donated about $2500.00 to the pantry- way to keep it local guys!!! The Springbrook VFW is open M-F 3-9 Sat and Sun 12-9, weds evening (4:30-6:30pm )they do a burger for $2.50 that is delicious!!! August 3 come on out and listen to Les Mallard from 7-9pm, everyone enjoys Karoake right? If you have any questions please give them a call  at 715-766-2128. Thanks for supporting the Springbrook VFW!!
