Spooner Advocate Column- July 25,2013

Hello there friend-Were you able to get out and enjoy the cooler weather? I was really happy when the cooler weather rolled in as we were at the LCO Pow-wow all weekend. I have to say it was quite a turnout and everyone had a great time! The Aztec dancers were very cool too see all dressed up and well... what a dance! So much energy! I would never make it through just one of their dances!

VFW Post 10568 Canteen in Springbrook is having a community yard sale, silent auction, meat raffle and D.J. Keith all this coming weekend July 27- they open at noon.Questions 715-766-2128.

LCO Community College has there class schedule up....July 25- Solar Cooker/ Dehydrator at the farm 5pm-8pm. July 26-Farmer's Market from 9-2pm at the IGA parking lot. July 27-Namekagon River Canoe/Fishing trip from 10 am- 4pm. July 31- Wild Rice Knockers from 5-8 pm.

The Spooner Memorial Library has their Summer Reading Program up- sounds like they are off to a really good start with all the folks that they have signed up! They offer an Adult reading program, a Teen-Ager as well as a preschool-12 year old reading program. Mikhaila and I participated in the one last year and it was just a great reason to read a book.... like I need a reason! LOL Anyway the ladies at the library need you to sign-up you and your kids, there are great prizes to win as well! You can get ahold of them at www.spooner.wislib.org, on FaceBook at Spooner Memorial Library or 715-635-2792.

 

The Sherman & Ruth Weiss Community Library have started their summer reading program. You can sign your Pre-K-4th graders up at the library. Its a great way to get kids to spend time reading! Reading can take you on an adventure as a cowboy, or be the first woman to fly a plane- it all can happen while reading a book! For more information please check out the website www.weisscommunitylibrary.com or give them a call at 715-634-2161. Go find a tree to sit under while reading a book.....let your imagination take you on a great adventure!

Springbrook Day at the VFW Post 10568 Canteen, August 31- they open at noon. There is a turkey shoot form 1:00-3:00pm, Pig roast with sweet corn from 3:00- 5:00pm- tickets for adults $8.00 pre-bought- $10 at the door, ages 6-12 $5.00 and Age 5- under ar FREE! Their is also a bounce house, pie contest by the Red Hat ladies and of course music from 5 pm until? 

Spooner Advocate Column- June 27, 2013

Hello there neighbor- Well it is either raining or it is 85 in the shade. It is one of these summers I guess! I am still trying to get my own garden in and well it has been a struggle! I have gotten most of the tools and the plants to all the outreach sites that I am planting community gardens at- they are not all planted at this time. But they have the tools and if it stays nice and stops raining we should have them planted this week! Please say a prayer for me as I am doing alot of traveling and well there have been obstacles so just pray it all goes good.
 
Musky Fest was this weekend in Hayward and it sure looked like there was alot of people in town for the events. I sure hope all the visitors have fun while they are in our great state of WI. To all the new folks out there thanks for coming to WI, we hope you like your stay! Please have a safe vacation while you are here.

I have to say a BIG thank you to all the people that helped put on the Sawyer County Dairy Breakfast at the Hayward fairgrounds! You all did a wonderful job! It was a bit rainy but hey none of us melted and we warmed up with a yummy breakfast. It is always fun to meet up with old friends-Teresa from Springbrook Organic Dairy, as always she had her wonderful products with for all of us to enjoy! It was fun to meet up with the Anderson family from Springbrook and eat breakfast with them. It always amazes Deb and I how much food Kaelon and Mikhaila can put away. They both have hollow legs and of course they are always on the go. Larry and the Drifters were very good to listen too- they were even doing requests! Overall it was a great time and thanks again to all the people that work so hard to get this put together every year!

We would like to invite anyone interested in participating in the Farmer's Market to give Amber a call 715-634-4790 to register. The Farmer's Market is open from 9-2 pm, every Friday at the LCO IGA parking lot on Highway K. There is no charge to sell your produce/ products. We sure would love to see some new people at the Farmer's Market!

Spooner Advocate Column- July 26,2012

Good morning neighbors!
Wow it is a hot one out there already, suppose to go up to 89! I hope everyone is being smart in the heat, drinking lots of water, stay cool- air is wonderful but even with a fan on and a wet towel around the shoulders will help! Keep your windows closed and curtains closed. Remember if you are feeling weird, sick, not the normal way you always feel call for help. Check on people as well as all those animals that are out there- they need shade and water! Be smart... stay safe.

Our prayers go out to Barb Atkinson's family, her brother passed away from the heat last week.

A big thank you goes out to Sandy and Len Sheehan of Whispering Oaks Equine Center, Hayward for hosting a horse pasture walk on July 21. The Sheehans have a wonderful set-up over there for boarding about 40 horses, large indoor arena, nice big pastures. We were very impressed how very professional, clean and inviting their set-up is. Makes you want to have a horse to board over there just so you can go ride the trails! Thanks again for having us all out to the farm!

On the weekend of July 14th the Springbrook VFW had a big event to raise money for the local Washburn Food Pantry. The Springbrook VFW, which is a chartered organization that is made up of volunteers who are Veterans  that were in combat zones, host different venues to raise money for various organizations. The organization has donated various monetary amounts to Scholarships for Seniors, Spooner Girl Soccer Team, Vetereans that need help just to name a few. They  have also volunteered hours cleaning the railroad tracks right there in Springbrook. This last fundraiser was for the Washburn County Food Shelf. They had 5 bands, 2 guitarist who entertained over 500 people. It seems like everyone had a good time listening to the wonderful music and  listen to Larry and the Drifters until the bugs drove them inside! We appreciate all the volunteers that make things like this possible, thanks to all the bands that come out to entertain everyone with their talent! Without all of you things like this would not be possible. Springbrook VFW were happy to donate a pickup truck full of food as well as $1500.00 to the food shelf, so far to date they have donated about $2500.00 to the pantry- way to keep it local guys!!! The Springbrook VFW is open M-F 3-9 Sat and Sun 12-9, weds evening (4:30-6:30pm )they do a burger for $2.50 that is delicious!!! August 3 come on out and listen to Les Mallard from 7-9pm, everyone enjoys Karoake right? If you have any questions please give them a call  at 715-766-2128. The Washburn County Fair starts this week in Spooner. Good luck to all the exhibitors! We appreciate all the hard work you put into your animals and exhibits! Please go and check out all the fun that will be going on at the fair, you can pick up a schedule of events a the Kwik-Trip in town. Enjoy the Washburn County Fair!!

Spooner Advocate Column- June 28, 2012

Hello there neighbors. Wow are you as busy as I feel I am? Seems there is always something to do or to go check out. This was one of those weekends where there was plenty to choose from!
This was the last weekend of the Wi Quilt Shop Hop, if you went around the state looking at the different stores were you surprised how different they all were? How about the great folks that worked at them? Talk about some really wonderful people! Also talk about goodies to drool over! Wow! I was really good and really just focused on getting the blocks that the stores offered and looking at the different projects that everyone had to offer. Don't worry I took notes on what I want and who had it! LOL Two of my favorite new stores are Heartlight Quilt Shop in Ladysmith- You can get hold of Kathleen at www.heartlighthouse.com and Bolts of Fun Quilt Shop in Thorp- you can get ahold of Sandy at www.boltsoffun.com. Yes they are alittle ways away. However they are both worth the drive! Sandy has the cutest dog! Kathleen has amazing old quilts all over her porches!

A big thank you goes out to all the folks that helped put the Sawyer County Breakfast together. Wow they really did a great job getting all of us through the food lines! I was amazed how many people showed up as it was raining- however that did not dampen anyone's spirits! We met some new people at the breakfast, even someone who reads my column, hi Phyllis! Such a small world we live in! It saddens me that the dairy breakfasts are now over for the year- it does make me start dreaming about next year tho! I don't know why the food taste so much better when someone else cooks it or when you eat it outside! I look forward to seeing you all again next year! Remember to thank the farmers for all their hard work when you see them!

Speaking of things that are held only once a year I hope you have your projects ready for the Washburn County Fair! The fair is right around the corner July 26-29, 2012 at the Washburn Fair Grounds in Spooner. You can get all the  entry forms on the computer at  www.washburncountyfair.com, the registration deadline is July 13. If you are going to be submitting entries for the Sawyer County Fair, the fair runs August 16-19, 2012 in Hayward. The registration deadline is August 3, 2012 and all the info and forms can be found at www.sawyercountyfair.org. We are big supporters of local fairs and have been entering projects in them for 10 years now- its not just for the young kids you know! Hope this is the year you take  the big step and enter something, you will have fun doing it  and you might even win a ribbon! See you at the fair!

A big thank you goes out to the Shuman Cattle Company in Hayward. They had us all out for a pasture walk on Sat and about 70+ people showed up! They have some beautiful animals, very calm for animals that size! Tweed and his family did a great job at making us feel welcome, showing us around the farm, letting us see how they still use horses to move the cattle and letting us ask questions! They served a delicious lunch for all that attended as well! Great job guys! Thanks for hosting a pasture walk!
